I need some help diagnosing where i am having problems on my ADSL. This is a recent issue, been happening for about 1 week or 2.

My line is a 2mbs line. I have an uncapped account with Mweb and an afrihost 1Gb free account.

Download speeds are terrible even local sites struggle to load.

Below speed tests i took earlier with two different ISP accounts

MWEB (tested on their own speedtest site):
Results:
Download Speed: 662 kbps (82.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 426 kbps (53.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 245 ms
Jitter: 62 ms
3/2/2014 5:23:56 PM

Afrihost (tested on speedtest.net):
http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3342986699

Can somebody help advise what else I should be checking/testing

Please show us your line stats, and also run a tracert to www.mybroadband.co.za or a similar local site.

Your pings are very high with a high jitter too, and also your dl speed is shocking on both accounts.

Seeing your line stats and a tracert will show us more.

i hope these are the correct line stats (Statistics ADSL on my modem)

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 15.6 10.0
Attenuation (dB): 54.0 31.5
Output Power (dBm): 16.5 11.9
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 4928 792
Rate (Kbps): 2048 512
K (number of bytes in DMT frame): 65 17
R (number of check bytes in RS code word): 0 0
S (RS code word size in DMT frame): 1 1
D (interleaver depth): 1 1
Delay (msec): 0 0

I think that attenuation rate is very borderline.

Your traceroute is absolutely rubbish. You would have to contact
MWeb or Telkom, depending who is in charge of your line and have it tested.

Are you sure there are no downloads running on your pc or on your network when you did the test?

Even that 1st hop is to high. That can indicate a router or home network issue.

No downloads were running. I basically use torrents and nzbs for downloads. my torrent client was closed, and nothing is running on SABnzbd.

How can i diagnose if there is a network issue at my house?

duplicate post - the network issues are not making it easy for me to post

I was on the phone with telkom for the line - was on hold for really long. Have asked the forum Telkom rep to take a look.

I'm not really sure.
I would remove telephones and ensure that the router is plugged in directly to the wall socket. Switch off all other pc's.

Also heard that alarm systens can create issues. So switch that off just during test.

Try with a different router.

Are you far from an exchange , because the SNR is okay, but not super great and the ATN is poor.

The traceroute seem to indicate congestion on several of the hops, but if you haven't experienced congestion before, it is more likely there might be a line or area fault.

I'm no expert though.

I have a separate modem and router.

I have quite a few devices (cell phones, pc's, PS3 etc) connected to the router. But nothing that I had added or changed recently.

I guess i can switch off the router, that will disconnect everything. I could run the tests with just a pc connected to the modem.

I will do that and post the results.

Results from testing connected directly to the modem

Do another traceroute and see if you still have 1st hop issue. Maybe tge modem + router explain the 1st hop of 3ms.

The rest of the results are pathetic though. You will get nowhere with the high ping on every hop.

Edit:
Sorry posted this before I saw your previous post.

Looking much better.
What is your line speed?

2mbs line.

So it would appear there is something wrong on the network or something wrong with the router - but thats going to be difficult to troubleshoot. i| havent added new devices or changed anything on the router.

Maybe it was a temporally area or exchange problem.
Ad devices 1 by one and check every time you add.

Edit:
Also check your SNR and Att stats regularly.

So I spent a lot of time adding one device at a time to the router and testing the line speeds. I found the culprit, one laptop seems to be killing the network as soon as its connected.

Now the trouble is i dont know what is causing the problem on this machine. Did the virus scan and no issues. What else should i be looking at (short of re-installing windows)

Do you have a network monitor on the laptop? I mean is it killing your network by just downloading/uploading tons of data 24/7, or is it a hardware issue?
I use http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/ personally. Its very lightweight.

There were no downloads running on the machine - it was just being used for normal work, regular web browsing. I cant tell if there is a hardware issue - it looks like its working normal (you can browse the web normally).

I have no network monitor. I will try the one you have suggested. Would it be able to point out if there is some rogue app which is hogging the bandwidth?

Yeah it can. Go to "Applications" in the Usage Report section, you'll just need to go into the settings and turn on "Ignore local traffic within LAN" setting, then just keep refreshing the stats on the usage report.

Had a similar issue with my desktop recently, turned out to be malware jabbering away using all my bandwith.
Installed MalwareBytes, updated, scanned and cleaned now all is good again :D
