+1, but quite a bit more expensive... though they do have a MUCH better range and clarity than the z2300, even the z4's have a better range than the z2300 now that i think about it...

something to keep in mind, the z2300 only has a mid in each satelite, no tweeter, so you dont get as rich high's which leaves you with a system thats pretty bass heavy (which under certain circumstances is good, like if you listen to drum & bass etc) you can get the same effect though with a system with tweeters and just adjusting your equaliser settings by upping the bass and mids and dropping the highs whereas you cant really get clean highs if there arent any tweeters.

i have the altec lansing fx4021 system and love it to death. its around R1400 but unfortunately only 40rms. the range and clarity is however comparable to logitech's z5500...

Where did you get your Altec Lansing? Any web-dealer specialized in these speakers you can recommend?

i got them from a shop in durban thats closed down now but i've seen them on a few sites ranging from R1150ish (below) to R2300 (wantitall - rip off!!!!)
these guys are practically giving it away and they're situated in bedfordview, so you can order online and collect from their shop in bedford centre if you want. i havent used these guys before though.

They look like a really nice set of speakers. Should be good. They have a wireless remote anyway, which none of the Logitech or Creative 2.1 sets have.

bummer man.
do a google search for SA pages, gets a few results. prices are a bit higher though.
otherwise, if you're not completely obsessed with having sharp and crisp highs, the z2300 would be my next recommendation. its a fair bit more powerful as well and most people wont even notice that the treble is a bit blunt, especially if you're watching movies. you only really pick up the lack of a tweeter when listening to classical music or if you know a thing or two about music and speakers...
btw - someone mentioned the bose companion series... i havent heard them but i've heard very good things about them. no idea how much they cost though.

Current and voltage have RMS values, yes. Power could be calculated in RMS too, but this would be totally useless.

http://www.hifi-writer.com/he/misc/rmspower.htm

P(rms) = V(rms)*I(rms) (I don't really care if that author thinks it's crap, but for as long as tertiary institutions teach it this way, I'd take their explanation over his)

I don't see how it's useless - it allows for a standardised comparison across multiple manufacturers. Peak values on the other hand, may differ between manufacturers.

What I'm saying is that it's a useless term. I'm not promoting the author's point of view. I'm attacking the term, not the quantity. "Watts RMS" is the power rating obtained by measuring RMS Voltage.

Got home, unpacked my FX4021, connect and switch on. Very noticable improvement from my cheap R300 5.1. With default settings, bass is more power and better sound penatration, you can feel it. And as advertised, more clear and crisp sound, treble and voice are much clearer than before, defintely a bargin buy.
