Hi there,

I have just implemented a new server that will be used to backup files amongst other Software that will run from it.

I need a setup whereby the guys can link to the backup HDD of this server via the network and put docs onto the drive, or take docs off there if need be.

The server is running Win7PRO x86 and all desktops and Laptops are on a mix of Win7PRO and Win7Home.

When i try connect into the machine via Start> \\192.168.1.250, it asks me for a network password, which for the life of me i dont know what it is. I have also turned off password sharing in Network and Sharing Centre, but still get asked for the password everytime i try and map a network drive to it.

Does anyone know of a nice software that i can use, or a way for me to set this up? I am aware of "Drop Box" and haven't actually used it, but am under the impression that it syncs files, which i DO NOT want. The users must drop files and upload files as they want. Syncing them is just going to cause the wrong people having the wrong files, HDD space being used up on the client machines etc...

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance

In a non-domain environment you need to set up a user-account with the same username and password on All the PCs and the "server" or enable Guest access and turn off password-required access to the "server" then you can set the shares to be read/write by guests/username

Thanks for your input!

Where do i go about doing this? Why have they made Win7 so difficult to do this with? I had no problems setting this all up on XP with different usernames etc...

Win7 Server=win7
1st user on PC1 =user1
2nd user on PC2 =user2
3rd user on PC3 =user3

Easy solution make local users with passwords on the Win7 Server.
win7\user1;win7\user2\win7\user3

Assign them the approriate rights on the server and share them to the directories they need to have access too.
On Pc1 permanently map the Z:\drive to \\win7\share1 with user1 and "password1", etc.
Do the same for the other 2 Pc's.
