Need some help with a website please.

Firstly: They hold your information. If you need technical assistance I doubt they will provide it. They also have no guarentee''s on uptime of the website etc. Also if you go with a cc domain, what if they hold it hostage? You will have to go through the domain authority for .cc which is overseas, and most likey phone them to get anything done.
You can't hold them accountable. There's millions of reasons, It would be almost virtually suicide to go with a freebie like that.

Thanks Synergy, cheap is a relative term…my site will not have much traffic I think, I don’t need it to be local, how much are you paying at the moment if I may ask?

In -most- cases, you're going to look at around R20.00 or R30.00 per month for a conservative web hosting account.

Keep in mind that in web hosting, the saying "you get what you pay for" is very applicable.

Thanks guys, but I will want to go with .co.za, as the one domain is already registered. Anything in the R30-R50 will be fine, as long as it has support and reasonable uptime.

Much better budget if you want both real support and uptime ;)

Good luck with your venture, we're quite a good community of experts on this forum so you're in right hands.

Thank you man.:D

So to sum up I’m looking at about :
R700 for development
R50/m for hosting
What will the cost of domain registration for the second domain be? Can I register it myself?

www.co.za

But you gonna need help filling it in.
Personally get one of us: Serv/Texo/Raven Servers to do it on your behalf.

I do freelance websites as a hobby (for a small payment, of course). I also do graphic/logo design. I also do marketing collateral. My clients are always very satisfied with my work... :)

Quick Question Raven - do I need to pay more to run something like PHPBB or is it usually included in the webhosting fee? also, thanx for hosting me and Lino.

Raven - do you host on Linux or...? Reason is, I develop primarily .NET apps and need IIS running on the web server. I'm not the biggest Apache fan. :p

Have you tried GamCo yet? R51.30 for the Basic hosting option (and supports pretty much any server-side code you might want to use, i.e. PHP, ASP.NET, Cold Fusion, etc.). Service has been fast and reliable so far. I recommend GamCo to all my clients.

Thank you, hosting is not a real issue for me, that would be the developers problem as far as i'm concerned, I just need something reliable in terms of uptime, and I need to be able to update the site myself. I need a basic page for now, but that wont be the case for long, as we are expanding locally and into Africa. The artwork is my biggest concern, I have done some frontpage stuff myself, but if you want a professional look then you have to get professionals involved.

Hi Keeper,

There would be no extra charge at all for running something like that and will gladly help with the install if you need.

Hi FarligOpptreden,

We primarily use Linux, that is correct. If you wish to have a dedicated server ($$$), I can arrange for Windows to be installed on it, however it would need to be administered by you and not by us.

Let me know if you guys have any further questions.

Ok if I have the site done in Frontpage do I still have to enable frontpage extensions? I seem to remember something like that.

I don't see why you should be charged extra if you use FrontPage extensions. I recommend you ask your host if they charge extra for it.
