NeoConnect Ethernet device planned

who cares about battery life, this thing will be connected to my router anyway

Good to hear that.

When they've done a speed test and it's acceptable, then they can count /me as one of their customers.

At last (and at least) they've started to listen... :)

Hay further pointed out that Ethernet is a power hungry service and that this addition will mean a far shorter battery life than what is currently the case with the USB connectivity. The current devices have been praised for their particularly good battery life, something which Neotel would not have liked to sacrifice.

As long as it's acceptable, and does not chomp power like a geyser... I'll sacrifice battery life just to have ethernet. Plus, I can put an UPS on, so what's the big deal? :D

what neotel needs to do is sell some separate antennas so that they could extend coverage

WTF? If you have a Ethernet cable plugged in odds are you don't need to run on a friggen battery

Has Neotel ever heard of PoE? Just power the stupid brick when you have the cable plugged in and when there is no cable plugged in it can run off battery.

Really reaaaaly stupid.

Shake&Bake : Yeah.. to some degree it has. As long as the Ethernet device is a decent one that doesn't cost more than the current phone unit.

I'll definitely take a look at this ... after Neotel have demonstrated the signal strength at my house ... after we see power, heat, size and noise figures (should be small, cool and silent?) ... and after Libs has tested that it works with SmoothWall! ;)

I notice a lot of complaints/criticisms about this, yet Neotel is probably one of the only companies in SA to actually listen to the users and try create a solution to the requests.

A very big thumbs up to Neotel and I hope they keep up this trend, would be a first in SA to have even the possibility of decent customer service.

The battery is for when Eskom sheds your ass :-)

Telkom supplies standard phones with power via the phone line, independently of any Eskom supply, but this obviously doesn't work for a wireless connection, hence the battery.

I'd hate to be in a position where I can't call for help, just because the power is out. Yes, that is why I have a cellphone, but why should my "landline" phone stop working when the power is off, too?

For me NeoTel's current services are unfortunately not what I call broadband internet access. I need higher speed, especially upload speed, ethernet access, and an always-on connection that works independantly from phone calls. None of this NeoTel can offer me at the moment, and I have expressed my dissapointment with their product line previously. However, as others have said, I really like what I'm reading. It does now look like NeoTel is here to offer customer centred service, which is what we have not had up till now. It gives me hope that maybe at some point in the future they would be able to provide me with a service that I can use and need. Untill then, I guess I am stuck with Telkom.

Nice one NeoTel, keep building.

:D:D

Smoothwall FTW!! :D

I certainly hope they offer a subsidy or trade on their current device, as I have just signed up for their service yesterday.

Battery...... Portable ...... wtf.....

Dude, the service they offer may be wireless but it is location fixed. therefore, if one wants mobility around the house, produce a wireless headset to go with base station that is placed out the way.

this base station should act as a wifi router/telephone with ability to add additional handsets.

there that is what your consumer wants... now you can pay me millions for the market analysis that will make you rich..

Th only problem I have, is that it will still be wireless, it's just the device that is now connecting to a switch instead of to your pc. Not really an improvement. Maybe I should look around and see what there latencies are like...

Roger that :)

They don't call it "Broadband" either, rather they make mention of high speed internet ;)

This is not really news is it - what would be News is that if they DIDN'T plan an ethernet device.

I am not sure exactly what Neotel's thinking is. The only thing that differentiate their option from Vodacom/MTN is pricing and back haul capacity. Both which can change very very quickly.

I think they should just start opening up their network for several devices, introduce URIM's and get us some flexible packages - including prepaid.

But then again - I am not sure whether new rulings in regards to cell phone networks/service providers contract length and cost disclose can be forced unto Neotel.

What the hell is up with the battery - my switches/routers don't have batteries in them!!

Neotel is developing an ethernet-enabled NeoConnect device to serve high-end users

High-end users??? :confused::eek:
