NeoConnect Lite prices emerge

I would try to push the Lite option to my dad, as he currently pays the phone bill every month. We have a Closer package with Telkom, but are still stuck on dial up. If this package from Neotel is good enough, then perhaps we can get that. 3 times faster than dial up is a big step up.

I think this month of May is going to see plenty of action from the Orange team.

Hey man. Hope it works out for you. Dial up sucks so much!!

If they offer a 1gb package with 384kbps connectivity for less than R100 i will signup immediately.

I'm sorry, but expecting Euro/US prices for broadband - or even worse... expecting Asian prices...

It's stupidity to the nth degree.

Come on people. We have one measly cable - ONE! And you "expect" 2mB+ speeds and uncapped noggals. It IS stupid - extremely stupid.

I'm not saying don't complain - but use your heads (preferably pulling them out your rear ends) and see the bigger picture. We are the furthest place in the world from the major international pipes (Australia is part of the Asia Pacific region, so don't even think about going down that road) and all the complaining and b*tching is not gonna do a damn thing about it. Move to another country if you want fast internet speeds so much. Sheesh!

On a personal note though - I remember getting atleast 5-6Gb of stuff I needed with dialup. This is ~3x as fast. If I could - I would. Instantly. Bugger voice traffic.

156kbps?!?!?! COMMMAAAAN NEOTEL!!! It's freaking 128k ISDN with a little bit exta for over head! Chr!st, help us already, we're going back into the stone age!

So much for 'Broadband' -shrugs-

We all know we've been suckling on the rear teat of SAT3/SAFE and the monopolies that control it. We also know that bandwidth and speeds on this cable is everything but stellar.

We know that Telkom has been milking us for ever cent on this cable, and the fact that Neotel can offer a much better package on their NeoConnect Prime at a much better cost throws allot of mud and cream pie in the face of Telkom and its pricing.

I think allot of people grab the short end of the stick here and wave it around brisquely in the hopes it will hit something. Lets be honest, your average internet user (or people who have no internet) would want a package that they can buy, gives them all the benifits of a (resonable) connection (considering they are coming from Dial-up or nothing, and without the hassle of being capped. Its not a great speed or price, sure, but its targeting a certain market segment, NOT the power users who frequent this site.

I would congratulate Neotel on providing us with three packages of varying speeds and prices and pro's / con's so far. Remember, they are also suckling on the rear teat of SAT3/SAFE at the moment. We can only begin to moan and groan when SEACOM lands and we get a decent cable and a real alternative to Telkom and SAT3/SAFE useless bandwidth and speeds. If you expected the ultimate Telkom killer to arrive using some of the same infrastructure then you will be in for a dissapointment. It would be unreasonable to expect that from any company. What we have seen though is that Telkom must sweat based on the new pricing coming from Neotel on the same cable, so all of us on Telkom ADSL might see a few price drops or speed increases.

Get off your high horses, put away the clapper guns and wake up to reality. SEACOM is coming, and when it lands, we can sit up and take notice of what is on offer. Liberation is at hand, we just need to wait that little bit longer.

R80 a month covers only the device.

I doubt you'll see that price anytime soon, unless they get some devices that costs WAY less than the current ones. Or would you like to buy the device upfront? Then R100 for 1GB doesn't seem that far-fetched.

I'm feeling a lot better seeing these packages.
The unlimited package is tempting, although I have a few concerns:
- "peak speed" 156 -> do they aim to delivery peak speed constantly on this package?
- contract -> if we take this device now will we be able to upgrade when their wimax or ADSL offer comes out without having to pay off the CDMA device?
- Rapidshare -> will we be able to use the free rapidshare servers (i.e. none of Telscum's invisible proxy nonsense).
- P2P / torrents -> what will the upload speed be?
- Constant connectivity -> will an incoming call interrupt your connection?

This is a step forward, but I'm too comfy with the IS newsserver.

I was hopeful at first, but after seeing this I am disappointed. The Speed is just way too low to be taken seriously. Neotel needs to offer some more substantial high speed packages. While a lot of people are looking to escape dial-up, there is plenty of choice in connectivity at the moment, except when it comes to uncapped. If that was uncapped at 512kbps for that price id get it. But at up to 156peak (on a very good day) I feel let down that Neotel is not doing something more substantial. Its like back to ISDN all over again.

Well on the other hand Telskommel ISDN 2A connected 24/7 at 128k and using infinitcall will cost in the region of R20 000 per month so not really a bad product compared to ISDN

I gave them a call to find out if my area (Kuils River) is covered. Apparently we're not on their map yet and there is no 156k unlimited package available. The consultant basically told me to "watch this space" as one the prime package is out there for customers. Truth is, we're debating/critisising this offering for nothing, tbh.

Slow speed perhaps, not much faster than dialup :(

This has not been answered yet.

I would not hold my breath
- P2P / torrents -> what will the upload speed be?
Safe to say, slow
- Constant connectivity -> will an incoming call interrupt your connection?
Either the net or make a call, not both. :(

This is a step forward, but I'm too comfy with the IS newsserver.

I guess only time will tell. For me, for now, it looks pretty poor as offers go.

:mad: who you calling stupid! Why shouldn't we expect the best? Why shouldn't we complain? SHEESH TO YOU...WHY DON'T YOU MOVE!

I'm not impressed with this package, i mean sure, they might be quick to point out the voice side bundled into the price or the device, but seriously, this offer sucks cost wise, even if you remove the voice part. Only thing it might be useful is for throughput/bw used intially while their network is uncongested..
