Neotel consumer tariffs revealed

Sweet, looking forward to hear what feedback you get rpm. It should also give us an indication of how forthcoming Neotel are with their information, or if they also intend to keep the consumer in the dark
 
I've just got off the phone with them. The bandwidth is indeed unshaped. So that's a massive saving in itself for 10gb of unshaped international. It's a 24 month contract and they currently include local bandwidth within the 10gb.i'll definately jump ship.
 
Hi RPM,

If you communicate with them further, please ask why they are only offering 24month contracts? IMO, this is a major deterring factor. I will not jump ship and get hog-tied into a contract.

Not sure if it's already been asked: but do you get 10gb local bandwidth per gig of international?
 
I really think that some comments made so far are not very well thought out. Who cares what the exact technology is that will be used. When I joined this forum it was all about broadband, and how we are being ripped off by Telkom (the monopoly). Some other players emerged over time, simply continuing Telkom's trend of "how to rip off broadband consumers". We moaned and bitched about them, hell we still do.

Then one day NeoTel came on the scene and finally there was hope that the introduction of competition will finally enable the SA consumer to buy an affordable and fair broadband service. After many many months of waiting they came up with something which does not equate to always on broadband internet access. Bandwidth price is pretty much in-line with what we already have, so no win for us there. So what if they throw in a few trinkets, make up a "bundle" and put it on sale. We can get free phones from any mobile operator if you willing to also sign for a 2 year contract.

This is not what I call a good deal, and I know what I'm talking about, cause the money for any such service comes out of my pocket. Why should I praise a product which is inferior to what I have at the moment? Where is the logic in that I wonder.

Oh, and btw, I still loathe Telkom with every bone in my body, but I'm not cutting my own nose of to spite my own face. For those who want to, we'll talk again in a few months. Our fight is still faar from over...

It makes me sick that everyone is just saying: "Its fine, atleast they r finally here and it will take time but the battle has been won"

Such BS cuz mybroadband.co.za still exists! The day the battle is won mybroadband can sell their domain and relax. OPS what do you say? wanna sell? how much? :rolleyes:
 
I don't think anyone said the battle was over... just a step going forward. A fairly big step to go from zero competition to some competition.

And since when I first started hating Telkom I decided I would support anyone against them, I'll gladly support NeoTel wherever I can. It's not so much cutting off my nose to spite my face as cutting out a cancerous tumor to benefit my face.

Well said - again. Considering becoming a journie? :p

I agree with what's been said - this is their first product, and until recently, Neotel have been dealing with court cases and ICASA just to get some ability to do SOMETHING. For their first product, I, personally, think it's outstanding. Eventually Neotel will do fibre-to-home and fixed-line services. But in the meantime, we at least have something. I look forward to the day when we have uncapped access, 14mbps connectivity - finally being on par with the rest of the world. But for now - this is a step in the right direction.

Problems will be sorted, disputes resolved and new services implemented as the market grows. That's business.

Uh.. I quite like the news section. So if it's all the same to you, I'd prefer that MyBroadband stays active, regardless. Thanks.
 
I must say at this price all in I will convert from ADSL. What is speed without miles anyway. This is a good mid sized sedan with an longish road to drive on.

I am going for it.

Yeah I suspect MyBroadband will continue to live even if Telkom just shuts up shop and gives us all we want. At least I certainly hope so.

I'd love to but I use Skype alot and the latency may hurt me. Also, I'm on the internet all day with my job... no way i can disconnect so my wife can use the phone. The phone will be out of action for 8 hours a day.
I know there are alot of newsgroup users that Telkom will still hang on to.

Does it really make you sick ? Go see a doctor.

Stuff doesn't happen over night, i'm not sure what you were expecting but its still going to take a while. This is a start... and a good start.

I'm quite happy with the offer. As I seem to find myself repeating - I used to pay Telkom R1,200 a month for one 3GB cap and two 2GB caps - which worked out to roughly 10GB a month anyway. As far as latency went in online games, it was rarely lower than 200ms, and that didn't really bug me, so I can deal with that.

To me, paying R600 a month in stead of R1,200 is a huge step forward. And 7c a meg out-of-bundle? WOOT! And all of this, ALL of it, is unshaped :D

While one niggling issue to me is not being able to be online while making a call, I can deal with that until something better comes along.

At that link, it seems that there are devices that allow simultaneous connectivity... Perhaps something to that effect will be implemented?

mmmm Since you all have been so nice i might consider keeping the news section just for you guys ;)
But i'll make sure its filled to the brim with spam from telkom to viagra... Just to serve... uhmm... some needs out there. :cool:
 
My question is... what if the DOC took down all restrictions overnight and Telkom dropped their prices to a reasonable level....
Would we still see competition and investment?
Would Neotel have started where they are aiming?
Or is it not possible to offer a cheaper service because of the investment to get started?
