I too will be cracking open the champagne, competition at last, though this offering is not for me.

I wish these companies would back themselves for once. The 24month contract tells me that they would rather legally tie me in, than provide me with a spectacular product i would not want to do without. In this way, they seek to cover the cost of the hardware & setup costs, and i understand it, of course, they are not here for charity.

Just remember this: once you sign up for this new technology, you are in it for the duration. The next time webafrica/openweb/access etc come up with a great new package at lower rates, it won't matter a jot. You're in another world.

Fair enough, but when I signed up for HSDPA in 2005, I thought am I doing the right thing? 24 month contract when affordable bandwidth is just around the corner.............

I think if you call 0800 333 636 and choose option 1, just ask them if they could tell you if you have coverage. If I understood what I was told correctly, even if they say "no" - you might have coverage, but they haven't activated their towers or whatever in that area yet. *shrug* I'm not sure. Just let them put you on their leads database and let them contact you whenever your area goes live... It's what I did

I sign up, sign a 24 month contract, 3 months down the line, I move to a area not covered by Neotel? Now what...

I smell ALLOT of issues on the horizon. I currently pay about 800 a month now for a 4MB DSL Service, VERY low latency, and it's also very stable.

600 pm at Neotel for a service not getting the speeds advertised, being wireless which is dodgy, and a small footprint where they cannot guarantee me stable service. The latency is SHOCKINGLY high (local)

Sorry Neotel, as much as I love you, I will definately give this one a miss... Price is not EVERYTHING, and you have failed to understand my needs as a consumer...

Yes, I kept bandwidth out of the math, for me 15GB bandwidht included in Neotel's offer is useless with 150ms local latency. The service is fundamentally wrong and therefore I have not even looked at what is included / not included. I don't need a phone, I don't want a wireless solution. When Neotel can pull 1 or 2 pairs of copper (or fiber) into my home, then we can talk... Untill then... Bye bye Neotel.

Is it basically VoIP or what?

And then what do "off-net" calls and sms cost?

Also is 150ms latency that bad? Is it good enough for say Battlefield 2? I've got ADSL 384kbps and I'm sure that my latency to SAIX game servers is about that, though I haven't been on in a long time and can't really remember.

NeoTel to NeoTel calls / SMSes. Basically, calls that stay on their own network.

On Net means calls on the Neotel Network. So calls to other networks, Telkom/Vodacom/MTN/Cell C would be excluded.

As I said before the 1000 free minutes are worthless (for at least a year until a few people move over NeoWait)

RPM, this may be ridiculous, but perhaps another question for you to add in the next email to Neotel: does unused bandwidth carry over to the next month?

MY WORD how we WHINE WHINE WHINE....that's all we've become..WHINERS!!!

The service doesn't suit my immediate needs therefore I wont take it BUT for some it's a perfect solution (like ABE) for various reasons. The value of a service isn't always measure in price and speed...there are other factors which come into play for allot of other individuals.

Where has all the anti Telkom sentiments gone??? The more I read this forum the more I feel a vast majority have become so negative about ANY good that's being done and look right past the silver lining and only see the rain a cloud brings.

I strongly feel a few of you need to go take a Business 101 class to see how costing really works. Money doesn't fall off trees for investment purposes and a business's debt isn't paid off through charity.

Give Neotel a chance to find their feet. Telkom and the likes have had YEARS to mature their products...Neotel is taking a stab at the market as an infant. It will soon learn what clients do and don't like and I'm sure will adjust their strategy accordingly. I think the important thing to note is that their service will cause some sort of a shake up in broadband costing whether that only be on the wireless side or fixed line as well...time will tell.
