There was clearly something horrible wrong with your ADSL if you struggled to get latency below 200ms. I got latency below 200ms on 56k, latency below 100 on ISDN, and latency below 40 on ADSL.

You are in for a massive shock if you plan on playing online games on this.
 
I am sure Neotel is aware of how big a drawback it is to not be able to use the phone and internet at the same time. I highly doubt that you will be able to fix it by simply using another device, this reeks of a massive design overlook, and is probably something that can't be fixed.
 
Well with regards to the not being able to stay online while calling, NeoTel has indicated that this will be a temporary problem rather than a permanent thing.

*shrug* Don't look at me :p For all I know, there was something wrong with my ADSL. As far as I'm concerned, it was called Telkom.

I don't play online games via South African servers, if that helps. I'm more of an MMORPG type of guy.

Plus, as I said, worst case scenario - I can wait until something better comes along. I just know I'll never pay Telkom another cent for so long as I live.

I'm starting to think South Africa's the only place where people get their knickers in a knot over a local cap. What do people use it on? News servers? Feel free to explain it to me because I don't get it. (Seriously - please explain it to me '>.>)

Unless they were uncapped it wouldn't be a problem

I prefer the cheaper option of buying the stuff from the shops. Even comes with free screen printed DVD, and cover. :D
 
No matter what, this is good news for us. It may not be ideal for all of us, but as they said, they will be bringing out more packages in the (hopefully) near future.

I pay about R500 (inclusive) a month for 384 with 2gb (3-4gb) international and 30gb local. They're offering a faster connection with more international bandwidth, but right now I'm not prepared to pay more than I'm paying now. So I'll wait to see what future offers they have.

But bottom line for me is that if there is a 24 months contract, it's absolutely out of the question.

Please take note Neotel, you may catch some, but those of us who have been around through the Sentech, etc times, you won't catch many of us with your contract.

See, I'm probably stirring the pot here, but to me, that's not what the internet should've been, or should ever be. The internet is meant to be this massive global community of geeks, nerds, weirdos, freaks and casual, "wazzat?s" Pirates, pr0nz0rz, gamers and terrorists. You know - what makes it interesting.

It's sad to think that in South Africa, choosing an ISP is done based on whether they provide a news server and a local cap. Or, really, a cap. <-- das uber period.

Eh, well, can't blame subscribers for looking for that in an ISP. But still...

*cuddles his torrents* News servers... Sound so... cold... empty... lifeless... torrentless... :(

Glad to finally see something coming out of Neotel! :)

Just a few points to make.

1) This isn't ADSL so Neotel don't have to comply with the ADSL regs - so they can hard cap if they want.

2) 24 months -> no way!

3) Content - without going through Telkom's invisible proxies we will be able to download from Rapidshare and similar file-sharing sites.

Where do I sign up?

I think their initial offering is fine by me. One stop shop. I can jettison Vodacom HSDPA and Telkom and get better bandwidth and more calls. Can't lose really can we?

You wouldn't really be able to lose if it was month to month, but in a 24 month contract you are the only one who have something to lose. Just ask all the Iburst and Sentech customers of old.
