Neotel network down

ECN COO Mike Britz says: “Neotel has experienced its second major network failure this week and its third fiber cable break in three to four months. This is completely unacceptable... How are companies expected to operate with this kind of service.

Come NEOTEL let me show you where you have installed your service less than 100mm under the surface- and u don't expect it to get broken? LOL:rolleyes:

wonder how many other places there cable layer has taken short cuts?

It seems that a combination of media hype and one or two individuals blew a relatively minor incident out of proportion.

This was a localised access fibre break. It did affect some local customer circuits connected to the specific fibre, but there was no question of it affecting a larger area. Also, all the enterprise services affected were kept within the availability parameters of their respective Service Level Agreements. Services with contracted high-availability use dual-redundant fibre feeds, and would not have experienced any down time.

We'd prefer our fibres not to be cut, but we have built a network architecture that minimises the impact of fibre breaks, and maximises availability to customers. Typically, no single fibre break has consequences beyond the immediate surrounding area, and critical services, including feeds to our CDMA (NeoConnect and NeoFlex) radio sites are built for high-availability.

Hey Neotel rep nice to see you commenting again:) Maybe you can give some much needed attention to some of the threads in your companies section HERE ;)

It only takes 1 disgruntled customer to wreck havoc on your reputation.
ESPECIALLY because they are the only Telkom competition.
I don't see light in the tunnel for a few years to come...

come on people, use your heads. Telkom loses numerous strands _daily_, and they've had how many years to build their networks? are we going to cry wolf every time there's an outage? with the amount of construction going on (not just people trenching fibre) this is going to happen again. don't forget, Gautrain is in that area. look at the US. does it make headline news every time there's a fibre break? do we see local frontpage news every time Telkom has a break? are now local journo's _that_ desperate for something to report on?

Who are you again ?

Vodacom did it ;)

Sun I often read your threads and nod my head in agreement, but really mate, that ain't fair. Voda had major issues in the beginning, I remember waiting two and a half months for my sim to be activated all the while paying for the service etc, in all honesty the service was shocking.

I am fairly confident that all of us here have experienced downtime, one way or another, and lets be real everytime Telkom does it to us we accept it, then when a new carrier actually tries to do a good job we sit here like animals sniffing for blood??? Pretty tough crowd wouldnt you say? As for the main complainant in the article, if only I could go into detail as to their service or lack thereof. PMSL now that is funny.

These forums are great and it is fantastic to see Neotel here, but why not use it as a constructive means versus a slagging fest? I cant remember seeing Telkom apologise about an exchange going down, not even when they themselves are down........

Everyone is making very valid points. I personally believe that most of the negative comments are due to frustration that has been creeping in. Over the last few months, we have heard things like overcharging of data, drop in reliable signal, Neoflex promises, bad service problems, etc. etc.

In lieu of another reasonably prices service provider, and constant feedback to keep the consumers informed, what else can we us customers do except complain?

Neotel Rep, welcome back after a long absence. Could you please give us an indication as to whether you will be answering some of the other threads (even if you just tell us “no”, that will also suffice)?

Cable break? And everyone giving Neotel grieve, seriously some thing are out of their control... Seems lately it's just moaning on all negative issues, reagrdless who is at fault...

Perhaps my curiosity is getting the better of me, but I would like to know which company actually caused the breakage of Neotel's fibre in that area, as well as the other similar recent incidents mentioned in the news article:
