Neotel network speed degradation update

As ive been telling alot of people, RSSI is a very poor indicator of signal. You need to look at EC/IO and DRC as well. EC/IO gives you signal quality. RSSI is an absolute measure of strength without regard to quality. So you may have a low RSSI indicating a strong signal but alot with alot of noise.

My EC/IO is hovering around -1. Before my amp it was -4 to -5, indicative of a very bad quality. Its ultimately the signal quality that determines your DRC (Data Rate Control) - the speed at which u sync to the tower. Have u used the EVDO pst to check out EC/IO?

Just ran a check on it now. My DRC is 1842.6 kbps and my EC/IO is chilling between 2.5 and 3.1

Last Result:
Download Speed: 273 kbps (34.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 72 kbps (9 KB/sec transfer rate)

I am convinced that there is something wrong with the tower.

Youre on prime right? Im not sure if it will work but it worked for me on my flex modem. Since my flex modem has 2 antennas, and my external setup only connects to one of those antenna ports, I found that my 2nd antenna was introducing noise into my setup. So i took my neotel modem and stuffed it into a cupboard to block as much signal going into the 2nd antenna. That reduced the noise for me considerably and so all my signal was coming from the external setup.

You could try the same thing and see if it helps you? Do you know which PN youre connected to? Also, is your DRC stable at 1.8 or is it dropping to 0 and back up to 1.8 etc?

Ye, I am on prime. Since its a phone, I cant stuff it into a cupboard :/ (Family members will whine, causing more ear pain than slow speed pain :p)

My DRC chills at 1.8, but every 5 seconds or so it refreshes, hops to something (I cant see, its too fast) then moves back to 1.8. I think its a normal ping for DRC test.

I'm connected to PN 304. When I point my antenna in other directions, I can see PN 152 with an RSSI of 72, and PN 128 with an RSSI of 81.

Will test my Amp, etc on Prime next week when I get mine. Finally! Has taken forever almost. Im hoping I didnt spend 2.5k in vain. The whole RSSI thing is weird cause I was getting 170kB/s with one as high as 85. Have found that the DRC is one directly responsible for the speed. It has classes from 1- 15 or so and each speed is in a diff class from what Ive noticed. 1228 is 9 and 1884 is 12. Hoping the gear will allow me to max it like you Ushir. Will be interested to see how it will perform on a decent tower.

Jeesh, come on wantitall get it here already :)

Hmm - my DRC is stable at 2.4 - doesnt change unless i move something. My EC/IO is also very stable - it stays in the 0.8-2 range. Listen, if youre close by youre welcome to test out the amp - I can bring it buy and we can see. Or wait for style to get his and he can post his verdict. Right now only 2 ppl have an amp, myself and newb-lite. You can also bring your prime device to my place and we can see what we get here vs ure place.

Ye, maybe. We shall see :D

On the current note, I bgelive I have just broken a world record.

My broadband device, is now doing an unbelievable 2.4kB/s

I should get like a certificate for this.

WTF?!?!

Ushir, you are a genius. I really love you. Remember you said to mount the antenna sideways? Well, I just got gatvol this afternoon with a speed of 3kB/s, I got out the cable ties, some glue, and I managed to mount the antenna sideways. Look at the results:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 946 kbps (118.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 79 kbps (9.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Now this is with an EC/IO of 5-6. Im definitely going to get an amp now. Just imagine the possibilities :D:D:D

Haha - see im not full of sh*t! It appears neotel polarized some of their towers to be horizontal instead of vertical. Not sure why they did this, probably to reduce signal noise?

In any case - everyone go turn your yagi's sideways! Whats ure latency like?

sound's good, just did a speedtest and got some decent speeds keep it going neotel,
cape town, southern suburbs

Last Result:
Download Speed: 1543 kbps (192.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 97 kbps (12.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

BTW this is vertically mounted antenna ;)

According to speedtest.net, my ping is 330. But a ping to www.mybroadband.co.za -l 1 returns a ping of 120ms.

And I dont have a yagi. I was one of those suckers that went out to buy an antenna before they starting handing them out for free. I gots me a LPDA-A0021. The man version of a yagi :D (+2dbi than a yagi)

MDE, are you using a Prime or Flex device?

Using the flex device my upload seems a bit slower than usual (usually around the 50-60 KB/s) download still pretty good:)

ping to mybroadband is 102 avg.

agentrfr - i too had that yagi, bought it from poynting as well! That thing was a monster! Ive now replaced it with a 30cm glass mount antenna - much more appealing to the eyes!

What equipment exactly do you have? :p Upload us a picture too :D

I cant wait! My gear should get here today! And this is what I got this morning just pointing the Yagi in the right direction!

Last Result:
Download Speed: 1586 kbps (198.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 85 kbps (10.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

and then OVER 1mb a few minutes later!!!

DRC = 2.4 but occasionally bumping down to 1.8 for a few split seconds.

Now let this dam amp and antenna get here today so I can do some real tests! Cant wait! :D

@Style - Jeese if thats what you getting now, I can only imagine what you would be getting with the amp?! Mayybe getting the real DRC of 3.1 sync.
