I propose we all club in and make a tips and tricks thead to help fellow Neotel users get the most out of their connection?

I'm still a fairly new user and would like to hear what some of you guys have?

The other day a friend pm'd me telling me its possible to check your tower and maybe change it? I know there is one close to me but the reception is realy bad here although i live in a ditch if I go to the roof of my block I still only get 3 bars of signal and disconnects like it's going outta fashion!

So lets all try and contribute out of our experience and try to make the best out of a k@k situation!

You've gotta be kidding.

Tips and tricks will not make our k@k signal any better :(

Stay positive mate, the guys are working on complaints and such. This is a threat for more technical info on the phone itself, connection settings in windows? Way's to swear at the call center monkeys and those types of things :D

When connecting an antenna to a neoflex modem, connect it to the jack that says Tx0/Rx0 - this is the antenna that does uploading and downloading. The other antenna only does downloading.

With a few tweaks I have optimised my signal clarity without an external antenna.

My NeoConnect tips/advice:
1. Find the best area in your home/office to setup your NeoConnect modem. 1.1 Check RSSI while walking around with the modem on battery, the lower the RSSI the better. - I use NeoConnect Lite Unlimited so at first just plugged into laptop and moved around while doing speed tests to find best location with optimal download/upload and latency results.
1.2 Try not setup near any solid walls or horizontal support columns or any other obvious obstructions. I have relocated my office into my sun-room with hardly any surrounding walls.
1.3 The higher you can rest the NeoConnect modem generally the better, I have mine resting on a desk and 2 paper-boxes about 1.7m off the ground.

2. Modem Placement and position - I manually went through the process of turning/twisting the modem to see which would give me the best results. This is how I setup my modem for optimal data transfer rates and latency, I don't receive or make calls on the modem so this way suites me fine.
2.1 Tape and fix the handest to the modem.
2.2 Roll and place a big ball of prestik (about 3-5cm in diameter should suffice) on the resting area of the modem.
2.3 Press the modem into the ball of prestik at about a 45' angle.
2.4 Check RSSI or do a speedtest while adjusting both angle of the modem and of the antenna to find optimal placement. I find having my modem at about 45' and antenna between a range of 80-100' gives me best performance.
Fix in place by whatever means and you are good to go, Sometimes I have to adjust the antenna slightly but otherwise using my method above has given me many hours of pleasant online experience.

3. Downloading
3.1 Remember to call in and request the necessary ports to be opened that you will use when downloading, my download's used to be slow until I realised this was a modem and not a router and needed my download ports opened.
Check your Torrent client/s for what port/s you will be using. I use Bitcomet and am almost always able to obtain my max download speeds depending on weather conditions.
3.2 Make sure you have a good virus/firewall setup.

4. Disconnects
* I have noticed quiet a few people having issues when downloading and when they are AFK that their download stops or they get disconnected, I leave my mIRC session connected and ping the server every 10 seconds. OR see this thread and use NeoPing by Keeper: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=163167

For my browsing needs I stick with Opera currently using Opera 10.00 Beta and have Opera Turbo enabled, works great !!

As far as I know you can check your tower but you can't change it unless you direct your antenna in a different direction. If you know another way let us know.

but in the end are you not more worried about your download speeds?

Of course u are, but if u cant communicate with the tower then ure not going to be able to connect at all - hence connecting it to the port that allows uploading and downloading.

I suppose if u get a splitter, u could connect it to both - but i havent been able to find anyone whos done this.

Does anyone know if its possible to telnet into the neoflex modem?

Take another look - those values are negative. You mean the higher the value, the better. For a description on signal strength and dBm, look here.

Nope was going according to RSSI which is indicated on the Device, the lower the figure the better, the higher the worse.

"There is no specified relationship of any particular physical parameter to the RSSI reading. The 802.11 standard does not define any relationship between RSSI value and power level in mW or dBm.
Range of RSSI values (from 0 to RSSI_Max)."

For a description and better understanding on RSSI here

Hi,

I have a few questions as i'm not an expert with computers nor technical things but do get around reading up on items.

With regards to :

3. Downloading

I play WOW and just would like a good latency, however i have done all the windows vista optimization etc. i still have this problem.

Is there a way to open ports for wow ?
and then the magic queston, how do i know what ports wow uses and who to phone them to open them?

Ok, its pretty simple if you've got a neoconnect prime.

Get the phone, and immediately phone up neotel and tell them you want your free antenna. They give one to you just like that. (There are much better ones, but the free one works great too :D)

Go get the axxestel programs, hook it into a laptop, plug phone in and connect to internet. Tell the axxestel to scan the COM ports until you find the neotel connection. Start a download or ping (such as "ping www.gam.co.za -t -l 1" in run) and then read all the values on the axxestel. The purpose of this is to find the place for the antenna, such that the DRC is the highest, and the EC/IO is the lowest. Ignore the RSSI readings.

Move antenna a bit, stand 2 meters back, and read on laptop values. Mark it down on a piece of paper. Go back to antenna and move a bit again. Repeat the process until you've done a complete 360 degrees. Look at paper and find place where DRC was highest and EC/IO was lowest. Move the antenna back there and then fine tune it.

The difference between a ping of 200ms and 120ms and speeds of 20kB/s and 120kB/s is about 5degrees on my antenna. It will take time to fine tune, but do it right, and your results will be worth it. :D

Its very important you move AWAY from antenna to look at readings, else the antenna uses you as an antenna too, defeating the point of what youre doing.

PM me if you need any help.

Phone up neotel customer care and tune them you want all your ports opened. Simple as that :D

Agent!!! WTH dude? :D LOL'z You funny... Call the antennae guys... I hear they are running a give away.... NOT:p

Sad to say but this thread will die off quickly, you can't make your k@k signal any better if it sucks, unless if it does get really bad, it's probably because of Neotel and then you must demand they get you an antenna.

The saying goes, YOU break it, YOU fix it and I don't care HOW you do it.

I dont know where you get that BS from...

Yes I finally managed to get a "test" antennae from them on a temp basis. But it is only a loan unit. And that was after 2 months of begging and pleading ...

Anyway . I have time this weekend ( after 2 hours of overtime on Sat ).

Things I want to try as I have the loan unit and my friends antennae which needs to go back to him on Sunday ( Think he is getting ready to cut my nuts off lol ) .

1. Try get both on different towers and see if there is some load balancing that takes place or not.
2. Try get some solid results for any differences with one antenna on one tower and both antennae on the one tower. I have had both on one tower for this week, but havent run any solid tests.
3. Try run tests for the polarisation of the Antennae. I was told it is supposed to be vertical, but I have seen posts where people have been getting better results with horizantle polarisation and that some towers are apparently horizantally polarised.
3. Get the Netflex device working to a linux box via USB so I can create my own connection so I can play with network settings. Been looking at how the device connects with it's inbuilt os and think I may have found a problem or at least an area that may be able to be improved on. Sadly the device itself is pretty sad from a number of aspects. I am not yet prepared to open it up and see if it can take a 3rd party OS due to the 24 month contract and them not likely to want it back after I have had my screwdriver in there :D

Wasn't BS at the time, I know of quiet a few who got their "free" antenna including myself.
Maybe it's not free anymore due to majority of NeoConnect users requesting an antenna ?

A customer shouldn't beg or plead, you are a paying customer not a begger, act like a begger and you will be treated like one, act like a concerned paying customer and you will get a much better response.
