Was forced to use windows 7 yesterday again for a while (3d scanning).

Each time I wanted to do something else my mouse would magically appear in the top left corner of the screen but worst of all, Nothing would happen!

Make yourself a w7 virtualbox and install your scanner into that (that is, if it can't work with xp - not familiar with what is a 3d scanner).

Just a note on that; if it is a USB device I would suggest VMWare player/workstation for a virtual machine, as it handles USB devices between guest and host really well compared to Virtualbox.

I like the empty USB filters in Virtualbox. If I attach a new device after my guest OS started it just work. I don't know if VMWare changed (or I didn't know how), but I had to shutdown configure and restart. I also like how Virtualbox take control of any USB device you request use of in guest (it unmount in host then mount in guest). I therefore don't agree with you (based on how well it work in Linux and not on how it work in VMWare or that blue OS).
I now changed all my software to freebies. Openoffice, The Gimp and Virtualbox. They all load faster and do everything I need it to do. OSS FTW.

Maybe they have improved on this in VirtualBox since I last tried it. Couldn't get it to read my Blackberry at all last time but with VMWare worked first time. I'll give VirtualBox another go and see what they've updated.

I have had some problems with Windows Mobile and Virtualbox in the past, but have not had an issue with it and USB for quite some time now.

The problem in the past was if the USB device resets itself, then you loose connection of it in the VM and need to re-enable (right click in the menu) it which caused some troubles. I do not have a WM device any more and all the other devices I have so far used on it (printers, other phones [Nokia, Samsung], mouse, keyboard, flash drives, etc.) just works like it should.

I have no problems with USB devices in Vbox: scanner, printer and graphics tablet all work perfectly (with sufficient hardware horsepower) - these are the only peripherals I have at the mo that stop me from dumping win altogether.

I can confirm that USB works well in VBox. That is version 4.0.12 (not one from Ubuntu repository) and I got even ActiveSync working between guest win 2003 and win mobile 5.1 device. Host is Ubuntu 10.04 on ProBook 4520s

Even my android phone's software works with no problem (have uninstalled it though, don't want my win vboxes accessing the internet).

lol, I only have 8GB RAM (and your average scan uses around 6 to 7GB).
Also uses the GPU (pretty much like the latest and greatest game would).
No Virtual machine can handle it and WINE is not going to cut it.
