Netbook price & feature comparison

Sigh, I wish they'd release an affordable Netbook in a tablet form factor so I can lie in bed and browse MyBB and read books, play some mame roms.

Damnit.

What a shocking article...

The quintessential netbook of our time, pretty much the only one that truly embodies what a netbook is, the Acer Aspire One A110L was left out.

1) The Asus 701W was included?? This netbook has far lower specs than the A110L and also costs more
2) The A110L is, to my knowledge, the cheapest netbook available in SA, bar NONE
3) You still get an Atom N270, 512MB RAM and an 8GB SSD
4) The A110L weighs less than the competition; under 1kg (it's heavier than the Asus 701W, but even with fewer features, the Asus is heavier on the pocket, so it evens out and then some :p )

Then the writer also goes on to say that the 4 hours of battery life from the Asus 701W is a bad thing, then goes on to name insane battery life to be had from the optional 6-cell batteries in the other netbooks.

rpm, James E-Smith needs to improve fast.

I thought the samsung nc10 only got about 8 hours of battery life. And I got all excited about the Asus EEE PC 1005HA in 6 cell version only to realize that most places sell only the 3 cell version. On top of that the prices in the table is for the 3 cell battery versions.

+100000000

A variety of factors influence the price, such as HDD size, amount of RAM, battery type, screen dimensions, and even colour. For the purpose of this roundup an entry-level model was selected.

For the Aspire one ->>
Cheaper versions are available but come with small Solid State Drives (SSD).

He then goes on to compare other solid state models against each other ...

Whats the point of comparisons if your base is skewed ...

Are you joking .. the credibility of this article is so bad, that I didnt even bother finishing it ....

Umm .. at 600 USD (PC World Mag anticipated retail price) this will overshoot every price on this list .....

I would say its probably cheaper to hire someone to read the webpages to you while you lie in bed ;) (preferably young and hot and female)

Rather get a super cheap netbook .. and leave tablets for another day .. seems barely worth the extra cash...

Those options are a bit limited being only intel based.
How about including some VIA and AMD netbooks ?

+1000 there

At the moment it seems like he's comparing 99% the same netbook just from a few different manufacturers.

Having a variety of configurations would make a LOT of sense.

Hmmm. Thought netbooks were a bit cheaper. Now I am very glad I bought my Compaq Mini 110 for R2500 :)

But you got a really awesome deal, remember?

A110L is R1999 at Incredible :p

No Kalahari.net prices?

I know they might not be the cheapest around... but surely James E-Smith could have included one of the bigger eTraders in his list????

Anyone know where I could find a Netbook with Nvidia ION?

And any idea on pricing?

This article doesn't give much to go on...

Anyway, I bought a Samsung NC10 yesterday. It's fantastic in every way, solid and well built, good battery life (I see about 4 hours on the standard battery with WiFi enabled), and the best thing is it charges fully in just over an hour. The performance is perfectly good for a netbook, Google Earth runs totally smooth.

Do not underestimate the value of the full size keyboard. Those small keys like the eeePC are horrible to work on. The NC10 is like working on any other laptop, just smaller.

Agreed, full keyboard ROCKS!! My Compaq takes quite a while to charge, comes with the tiny power brick. Got the 6 cell battery though, might be why it takes so long. Haven't tested how long it takes to charge, but it lasts very long. Running netbook remix 9.10 at the moment, think about going to Gentoo, really want something super configurable on my netbook.

I suspect you will buy a netbook with a pentium 3 processor, 5 inch screen, 250mb HDD and 0cm drop height tolerance if you can get it from some obscure Japanese website with a couple of geisha pictures thrown in as extras.
