Netbook price & feature comparison

I suspect you will buy a netbook with a pentium 3 processor, 5 inch screen, 250mb HDD and 0cm drop height tolerance if you can get it from some obscure Japanese website with a couple of geisha pictures thrown in as extras.

Nice troll except I didn't buy it from Conics. It beats anything available in Europe and here for that matter, and if you are blind to that but have some personal issues here - your post smacks of a personal attack on me - you don't deserve to be on an IT related forum. I actually paid about R5600 for mine, the Conics price is R9000, the benefit of someone actually pre-ordering an item for you in person in a NEC outlet in Akihabara pays off.

Your vitriol notwithstanding, if you could only touch this netbook you'd be agreeing with me and prolly saving up to get one of your own.

I wish they would give me an option to get any netbook WITHOUT windows on it. That should drop the price by about R1000

Nope, should drop the price by about R300 - R500 maybe. In some cases even only R200 ... remember, these windows licenses are purchased in extreme bulk as OEM's ... by the manufacturer. The price is marginal. I.e. Asus EEE 701 is only about R200 less then the 701CW windows version.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. :) And vitriol is maybe a bit of an exaggeration. ;)

I'm happy with my Asus 900HA - fits my needs perfectly. And I'm also glad you like yours.

Still, I would prefer that cost going towards better hardware, perhaps adding more ram, instead of terrible software that I will remove but still have to pay for.

True ... would be nice if we could buy a laptop with a choice of which operating system we want.

What a shocking article...

The quintessential netbook of our time, pretty much the only one that truly embodies what a netbook is, the Acer Aspire One A110L was left out.

I agree, and IC sells them for R1799 everytime they have a new store opening!

Had a AA1, sold it and got a 12" HP 2510p - a bit better screen & kb & as an optical drive...

This is a technology forum, you know. Most people should be interested in gadgets and certainly buying from foreign sites to get items not available locally is actually fun - better than talking to some guy in IC and walking away with a vanilla netbook. ;)

Look at the R13K HTC netbook Expansys lists though.... omw! What a rip off. :)

As already pointed out, the research behind this article is awesomely poor - I hope that no-one is getting paid for it. Another point to add to the errors already mentioned is that the Asus 701 with 4 GB SDD and 512 kB memory isn't offered with Windows XP - it only comes with Linux. If you want decent comparisons of available netbooks, www.liliputing.com is good - you'll just have to do your own research on local availability and pricing.

I bought one that came with windows  ... the Asus 701CW comes with Windows XP

You'll look hard to find a bigger gadget boy than me. :) Admittedly I'm not big on overseas purchases though. To each his own.

I'm offended at the IC remark. :) I only buy their when they mis-price their Canon photo paper (which happens quite often ).

The HTC Advantage X7510? Agreed, completely niche market. Overpriced and just can't imagine a scenario where I'd choose a cellphone/netbook hybrid when you can have both for cheaper - and more flexibility.

Nonsense, i bought from incredible ;)

Whats the specs on that A110L at incredible?

Intel Atom N270 @ 1.6GHz
512MB RAM
8GB Intel SSD (the slower one)
Webcam
Wifi
2 card readers
3-cell battery
Linpus Linux Lite

Shock!

http://www.expansys.co.za/d.aspx?i=187084
R9,059.99!!!

LOL

vs

my Baby :)

NEC VersaPro UltraLite VS

Intel Atom 1.86GHz
Intel GMA 500 (hardware 1080p H264 decode under Win7/Vista)
Windows XP Pro/Vista Business

Also cost me about R9,000

We get so screwed in the West with the junk we get and the high prices.

Sies, I thought you were into Macs?

So was it R9k or R5.6k?

You seem to be a magnet for personal attacks.

You read what you want to read. I own a Mac and numerous PCs. To be honest Panasonic and NEC often make better hardware than Apple in terms of notebooks but the OS is what really sucks regarding PCs.

So was it R9k or R5.6k?

The price to go to a NEC outlet store in say Akihabara and buy one, especially when preordered was about R5600. It would be about R9000 now with tax and markup.

This is a technology forum, hence I'd think many other people here are interested in gadgets and PC/computer related stuff.

Waiting for Pineview to come out next year, then I'll buy a netbook.

the HP Mini 2140 10" also not in the list, (although I've only been able to get them at Dions, so as mentioned, maybe availability bumped it from the list) which also goes for about R3500 at Dions, with 160Gb Hdd 1Gb RAM
for me the nice extra features are bluetooth and the neat aluminium case.
10" nicer than 8.9"
also has a switch to turn off the touchpad
I prefer this over the (more expensive) Acer Aspire anyday
even battery life is better

my Acer 110 is starting to pack-up. peachy. since ive broken every warranty tab possible to upgrade RAM i can see a R1999 paper-weight approaching.

I hope its just going through a phase, its been very stable until yesterday.
