Netflix + Hulu?

I've had a Netflix account for a few months now, and I couldn't possibly live without it anymore :) When I signed up for Netflix back in June, I also checked out Hulu (after hearing they're more up to date with series) but found it to be absolute rubbish for the most part. Yes, they were more up to date with series, but missed tons of episodes inbetween, and a LOT of their shows were "web-only" and I couldn't stream it to my TV via the PS3.

With Christmas season coming up, I'm considering getting Hulu in addition to Netflix, but I need to know... is it still like that? Basically - is Hulu worth it, and why would you say so?
 
Hulu is far better than Netflix. Netflix only gets shows long, long after they have aired.
I've never run into any shows that aren't available. But then I access Hulu on my AppleTV. Maybe there is a difference between the PS3 and the AppleTV
 
I've found that for movies, Netflix isn't too bad. Series is another matter though.

Depends how you consume series, if you like to watch them traditionally like TV... one episode a week, waiting for the next week to see whats going on then hulu does that.
If you like to watch an entire series in one shot then netflix is for you.

I have both, watch the old stuff on netflix and the new stuff on hulu, hulu's nice for things like late night, the today show etc... and american adverts are a little more entertaining than ours.

Both, really. There are some older series' that I catch up on and watch them multiple episodes at a time, and then there are the current series that I watch as new episodes release.

That's what I expect I'll do - use Netflix except when I want to watch current series.
How up to date is Hulu with the top-rated current series out there (HIMYM, Supernatural, Suits, etc)

Not sure on any of those to be honest.. lost interest in himym, only on season 5 of supernatural and haven't even started season 2 of suits.

You must remember, Channels like CBS don't allow Hulu etc. to really distribute their shows. They have their own site cbs.com where they allow you to stream the last couple episodes. Just like Hulu.

Also, for the original poster. You should look at getting something like a Roku. I ordered the cheaper LT model from Amazon. Only cost R800 with shipping, which took just over a week. Then you can actually add channels like Fox, CW, NBC, etc.
Just remember, Hulu only shows the last 5-6 episodes of some shows, as this is all that the distributors allow. Netflix was first a company that rented DVDs via mail, then they only started doing online streaming, so they will more than likely only stay with that model, of having stuff on there that is already available on DVD/Bluray.

I have both Netflix and Hulu+, and can really not think of life without either one. Loving Netflix right now for Halloween movies, watched Pet Sematary last night for the first time. Then my girlfriend loves Hulu for it's simplicity and convenience. It really changes your life. Yes, there are some shows that won't be on there, like HBO, Showtime, AMC, but that's only like a small margin compared to the stuff you do get.
 
One thing to remember with Netflix is that they have different regions. So if you're using Unotelly you can change your netflix region to UK or Ireland for more BBC stuff or even some new movies they get before the US Netflix.

I tried the Free Hulu, but it didn't impress me. Especially now with all the Netflix original series, I don't see the point of Hulu.

Thanks for the info - what's the difference between using a Roku and using the PS3? Just the ability to add Fox/CW/NBC? Even so, the Roku sounds pretty decent - damn my TV for only having 1 HDMI port though :( Already using an HDMI switch to switch between my DSTV PVR and the PS3, and the damn switch limits you to 720p as it is.

Well, go have a look at the Roku site, and browse the channel store. You'll basically get access to a lot of neat channels that have content that isn't on your PS3, like if you're into Anime, you can use crunchyroll and watch listen to pandora. Also, you will be able to use Plex to give you even more channels and better access to your local content you have on your network. The one downside for me about the PS3 for media streaming is, I feel like I'm decreasing the lifetime on my PS3 when I use it for Netflix and Hulu+. Using the Roku I feel like it is better for my PS3 as it isn't being used for other unnecessary stuffs.

But each to his own. Some want everything on one device. I prefer to have a device for media and one for gaming.
 
I ditched DSTV at the beginning of the month after buying a Roku and subscribed to Unotelly, Netflix and Hulu. I spend most of my time on Netflix watching the older series I never got around to watching but also use Hulu for the newest series episodes currently showing in the US. Unfortunately there are a lot of series on Hulu you can only watch via your web browser even with the Roku.

That's the part that annoys me... the web browser limitation. Meh.
(I'd ditch DSTV completely too if it wasn't for the sport. It's literally the only thing I use it for now. Such a waste :()

That is the one thing I am going to miss but then again it forces me to the pub or to visit some friends with DSTV for a braai. :p

I wonder what is the reasoning behind Hulu web browser only series?

Easiest way is to think of the Roku as the same as an AppleTV, but minus the iTunes store and AirPlay but plus Amazon Instant Video.

Out of curiosity, which shows on Hulu+ are only available on the web?

You can search for stuff accross ALL regions, then simply select your region, then watch

Quite a few of the series I watch actually. Off the top of my head, Haven and How I Met Your Mother. Will go check this evening what else.
 
I've got both, Roku 3 in the bedroom and the AT2 jailbreak in the lounge. Both offer different content and more variety in channels
