Netflix vs FrontRow vs Vidi vs Node in SA

I do believe the $7.99 plan is for the SD, single stream option(unless you're on a grandfathered account. It's R8.99 for the HD dual stream option now.

I'm almost certain Netflix also has DVD movie rentals. I'm at work now so can't check its blocked...

they do, but it's delivery + return based afaik.. so dont really think it applies to this article.

imo node is the best option for a SA solution so far.

It does have DVD rentals that get posted to you via normal postal service. Obviously that's not available in South Africa though.

It's great to see the comparison.

The other important element to consider is the number of platforms and operating systems supported, and the bitrate adaption used.

I know Jan mentioned this in the MTN review so it's just a case of tabulating the comparisons

Vidi almost competes with Netflix bar the fact that you have to pay R15 for some movies/shows that Netflix has included. And then there is DD5.1 for Netflix on numerous platforms...

Vidi just has an extremely poor user experience. The website is crap, the apps are crap and you just really don't feel like going back there.

That's the problem with all these local VOD services. It's obvious that almost zero thought has gone into the user interfaces for these platforms. You would think these guys would have at least spent some R&D looking at Netflix and Hulu and learnt a few lessons on how to design a decent user interface.

What I want to know is why are all these services charging R15 and R27 for movies?
Is this exactly the rate charged by the studios to them, or is this just some shameless price fixing based on what DSTV charges for BoxOffice? And nobody has the balls to charge anything lower. Let's just milk the customer some more.

Netflix sucks. Depending on your tastes, after about 8 months or so, you will have watched everything. Netflix adds so little everything that its unlikely you will get new content that you like. You might get 1 show every 6 months. Not worth paying for. Not even worth going the through the hassles of getting it for free :)

Still miles better than anything SA has to offer yet.
