Netflix vs FrontRow vs Vidi vs Node in SA

Netflix wins of course, by far. No need to even start comparing them so far. The local services should reduce their monthly subs if they are to still charge for movie rentals. Maybe that'll give them a chance.

Which local services are you referring to ?

In the UK, we can watch legally and for free(notwithstanding the tv licence) on Channel 4's streaming service, current shows. The downside is that at the beginning you have to sit through a 3 min advert. The shows become available, day after they aired on TV and are available for 30 days. Monday and Tues night 9pm is usually when they air the top shows here. This season will then be available in the UK on Amazon about 2 months after the season completes on Channel 4. When The Boss was showing season 2 on Channel 4, I binged watched season 1 on Amazon, then caught up on Channel 4 streaming in time to catch the last 3 shows of season 2 live on TV, which I ended up watching off the streaming service a day or 2 later, because I dont bother waiting for shows to start on TV any more.

I use Amazon.

@Bwana etc. Yes. its Netflix UK. very rubbish. I cancelled in Dec. Can't be bothered to do different regions. If they cant be bothered with my region, f### em :) Pretty much told them that in my feedback.

Its not so much that the Netflix catalog isn't vast. its just that I don't like it :)

What also annoys me about Netflix is that they still have Breaking Bad as "Recently Released"....

Currently have about 5 series on my Amazon watchlist.
The pickings for UK Netflix can be slim at times - I find myself switching between UK and US on a fairly regular basis since their catalogues are so very different.
How long after a season finishes does it come on Netflix?
Typically when the next season starts - or close to it.

Meh yet another useless article: let's compare based on costs because Monday, I don't really feel like producing quality work so let's gather the easiest group of info we can find, build a table in Excel and post it on the front page because, Monday.

This honestly drives me away from touching the home page as everything is either half assed or a "paid" editorial.

What this article could have been (if someone tried to put in the tiniest amount of effort):

Price
How many movies
How many series (title based)
How many series (show count)

The next is going to be steep and will require some actual reporting/research so I hope someone takes note:

Value index: this is calculated using "top chart X", for each show/movie that each service has on this chart they get a point, that way, we can actually get value from these articles.

/rant off.

You should check Ireland as well.

I might get the node. My 3G Uncapped is working so nicely and it is free for me because work pay for it. Don't see the use to pay R900 a month for adsl again, every 5 months I can take that money and buy a 42" with it lol.

You've now really put into perspective how much i spend on ADSL :(

I generally stick to the US unless I'm looking for something in which case I head to moreflicks and hope for the best. :)

That's the problem with all these local VOD services. It's obvious that almost zero thought has gone into the user interfaces for these platforms. You would think these guys would have at least spent some R&D looking at Netflix and Hulu and learnt a few lessons on how to design a decent user interface.

I tried to watch the Mummy, something I wouldn't watch but the selection is just sad, so I started watching and no subtitles, none for any of them, not even the Mummy, the selection is so poor most movies I have watched many times as a child or just watched recently on TV, I do like the tracking of what you've watched especially with series, if it had variety in Genres and more content then it could be amazing, additionally shows I was watching would disappear for good, its like I go into Vidi look for something they obviously don't have and then just log out and forget about the whole thing.

DStv flighted the pilot episode of Breaking Bad Series 1 last night :D

Just thought i'd let you know - for a mere R900pm :D :D

Yes, years ago. Just pointing out what rubbish DStv dish out to their viewer. The rest of the world have probably finished the final series - 5 or 6.

I think you're being dishonest here. I swear i saw an ad for it on the AMC channel on Friday at a friends.

Two things wrong, Breaking Bad finished airing on DSTV around the same time as it did in the States, second thing wrong if you're paying R900 for dstv you're paying R130 to much.
So if you're going to bash something maybe have a modicum of truth and perhaps in a more relevant topic.
