Netflix vs FrontRow vs Vidi vs Node in SA

What I want to know is why are all these services charging R15 and R27 for movies?
Is this exactly the rate charged by the studios to them, or is this just some shameless price fixing based on what DSTV charges for BoxOffice? And nobody has the balls to charge anything lower. Let's just milk the customer some more.

Seems to be the going rate. Actually below the going rate.

Apple and Amazon charge about £4 for a movie(£6 for the HD version). And then about £18 for a series season. R15 and R27 is cheap.

Its what the market is willing to pay. If you cant afford the market rate, thats something you need to deal with :)

Netflix sucks. Depending on your tastes, after about 8 months or so, you will have watched everything. Netflix adds so little everything that its unlikely you will get new content that you like. You might get 1 show every 6 months. Not worth paying for. Not even worth going the through the hassles of getting it for free :)

Are we talking about the same Netflix? The Netflix I know gets regular influxes of content and is rarely more than a season behind for most popular shows.

Then again you might be using Netflix UK?

These "legal experts" are scaremongers, paid up by the cartels to spread fud.
Fukk3m!
Almost all the movies I have downloaded and watched the last few months, will NEVER be shown in dear ol SA. We are a pi$$ squirt in the ocean of entertainment content and a select few here in SA, want to be the gatekeepers and control it all?
Fukk3m too!

As per bwana,

I had a similar experience but once bwana and Chevron told me about the different regions having different content. I change regions constantly and I doubt it will even take me 2 years to watch everything as it is with no updates through all the regions. Change you region and have a look ;)

Switch between the regions.... then try Hulu or Amazon for a while.

I assure you... if you can kill the Netflix catalog in 8 months there is nothing else that will help you.

DSTV actually lose some cash on certain R27 movies.

Sheesh, how much TV do you guys watch? OnTopic, if you change your dynamo region do you have to re-register the Roku?

Netlfix is awesome because they only get the show once the whole season is done. if you'd rather wait weekly for your episodes then netflix isn't for you.

Well i got the Node , and i am enjoying the movie rental system (the R15 | R25 per movie) , which is making me reconsider the subscription though. The R299 is a bit steep for what you get in my oppinion, as opposed to just renting movies .

The TV shows are all ancient , fortunately i have not been able to watch Mad Men , so having this show available on the node from Season 1 - 4 as part of the sub is useful (assuming they will add the further seasons on a monthly basis). So it is good depending on how much of the old shows you have watched. Weeds,Breaking Bad and Stargate for example, great shows, but we are talking season 1 here, which is like almost 10 years ago (especially Stargate). The movies in the subscription is also ancient, we are also talking 2007 and older, you are lucky to find anything newer than that, the newer movies are all on the rental shop. So i am getting a kick out of re-watching classics like Dune (i think this is like a 1980s movie), but i would probably prefer just paying R10 rental for it instead of R299 sub.

What i guess i do like the most: No streaming all pushed via Satelite (my main drawing point) . Despite having uncapped and i download most of the new tv shows, i absolutely hate streaming content with my connection, especially movies. So getting all the content via satellite and knowing i can just play and it will play, whether it is hailing outside or telkom line is down, i can watch it in proper quality.

I reckon Netflix is perfect for the person that does not want to haul a huge drive around with loads of cr@p on it that he has spent months downloading.

I have gotten to the point where I now trash what I have watched, keeping my drive free for more important stuff.

I use Amazon.

@Bwana etc. Yes. its Netflix UK. very rubbish. I cancelled in Dec. Can't be bothered to do different regions. If they cant be bothered with my region, f### em :) Pretty much told them that in my feedback.

Its not so much that the Netflix catalog isn't vast. its just that I don't like it :)

What also annoys me about Netflix is that they still have Breaking Bad as "Recently Released"....

Currently have about 5 series on my Amazon watchlist.

I actually watched it on there for the first time. Brilliant series, don't hate :p

100%, same reason I prefer Netflix.

Amazon is the same. Except at the moment, Amazon seem to be getting more and, imo better quality(yes this is subjective)

For now I will use Amazon as they are offering better shows.

Maybe in a years time, it will turn around and I wont like what Amazon have to offer. Thats why its good to have options and be able to cancel what you don't like when you want.

I don't see the point in paying £6 a month for a service if I am only going use it once every 6 months. May as well pay Apple the one-time £18 to buy the one season on Netflix that I do want to watch.

I enjoyed Amazon as it has the a good balance between free and rental stuff. But I struggled with buffering on my line so now I stick to Netflix. I'll go back when I run out of stuff to watch.

Netflix wins of course, by far. No need to even start comparing them so far. The local services should reduce their monthly subs if they are to still charge for movie rentals. Maybe that'll give them a chance.
