Hey,

I was wondering if anybody knew a place in durban where one can get network cabling made up and at a good price?

Thanks

Most PC shops can make the cables, it's really not that hard to do, so why not just buy a lot of cable, and then the connectors (can't remember the name :/), and just make your own?

Connectors are RJ-45's and you going to need a crimping tool.

Works out cheaper to make your own, and it's really not that difficult I remember doing it when I went to work with mates dad when I was a laaitie.

that's the one :p, ha ha. My brain is a little frizzled thus far after all this engineeringness this year ;).

But yeah, I think last time I bought premade cable, they charged me R70 for 20 meters, and instead of white or black, they gave me a hideous green cable . But yeah, seeing as my one mate works at compute now, if ever we need network cables, he'll just make one in 5-10 min :p (afaik, he's got like 200 meters in his car :p)

I know the feeling! I've got 5 semester tests coming up this week! :D So exciting!

My gosh :P What is he going to do with 200m of cable? Isn't attenuation a problem with ethernet cables if they go more than 30m or something?

hmmm, I only have two this coming week, haven't really started studying though :p. ha ha ha. But yeah, my exams are going to kill me :p, my brain is already becoming moosh :p

Well, he cuts up the cable, and then makes lots of baby cables from it :p. ha ha. We usually only use 2~10 meter cables (even for massive lans :P).

And you are correct, over 30m you do start to lose a little speed, 100m is pretty much the limit. It's all down to that pesky resistance of copper wire, and also the fact that you get weird capacitance and inductance as the cables get longer (meaning you get weird chargers, and the likes :p).

You are @Wits?

Ah, you see i'm not so clued up on this capacitance and inductance stuff - I'm studying to become a civil engineer and I didn't do too well in my 1st year electronics course haha :P

lol, yeah, I'm at wits :p, electrical engineering though ;), So I really need to know my electrical business (also considering I have to pass every question on the tests+exam to pass the year :p)

Rather you than me man! I can't see people can put themselves through all that electronics :P

Have fun! ;)

Ha ha, I think it's the same argument here against civil (even though us sparky engineers do you civil ;) ---> in a Capacitor, I (current) leads Voltage. in an Inductor (L), Voltage leads current (I) , hee hee).

but yeah, it's actually quite a fun course, we build weird things, like a phone (that will work via a twisted cable), and also a dc motor ;), how awesome are we :p.

NCST in Springfield Park, Ebony Drive if I RMBR correct! But other than that, what are you looking for? I may be able to help!

hey all,

thanks for all the insights, especially about the stress of studying engineering :P

I am basically looking for network from router to tv and its about 40 metres in distance.

Hmmm, well, with 40 meters, you gonna only get like 80-90% of the signal speed (if a gig network, then about 800 mbits), but yeah, for 40 meters, I guess it'll be best to buy it premade :p

Holy COW!!! They still around? :) I used to collect from them 4 times a week when I was in the "pulling wire game" :)

I'm sure they are due to the website but it's been a while since I've been there.

They should be relatively cheap seeing they are a major supplier.
