Network problems in Pretoria

Hi V3G

I have read your message to BBSA, but I'm still not sure that is the extend of the problems in Pretoria. It does not seems to be only one problematic "cell". I have read other forums also and it seems that there are many people specifically in Pretoria which is unhappy.

Is it one cell, two or ten cells which are affected? Could you also please let me know which areas are affected?
Ummm, are you sure that it wasn't the iBurst forum where you saw that? - there were [post=242395]major problems with iBurst in Pretoria in July [2005]...[/post]unless I have neglected to read an important thread in this forum, I am not aware of any general problems with Vodacom's 3G in Pretoria - only BBSA's tower that seems to be hugely problematic...

Pinged smtp.vodacom.co.za
Test: Sent 203 Recd 200 Lost 3
Min 231 Max 452 Ave 336

FTP: from smtp.vodacom.co.za
Downloaded old dashboard software zip
Ave 28.72 kB/s

From these results, I'd venture your radio and transmission links are fine. Depending on how busy your cell is, you could get up to about 38Kb/s download speed, but around 30Kb/s is probably an average.

Might be an idea to run the tests ad hoc over a few days to check for consistency.

BBSA is also seeing the terrible throughput in the Centurion area and as posted here the Vodacom & Siemens guys are looking into it.

I again confirmed with a bunch of different people that there are no out of the ordinary problems in the greater area. The Network Management Center, the various call desks and the statistical reports show no abnormal behaviour.

As already stated, this does not mean that specific cells don't have a problem.

On this point, the quicker you guys report a problem, the quicker it will get attended to and resolved.

Had a situation a while ago where a 3G user could get no coverage at all, anywhere between Pretoria and Jhb. After three weeks, he went to the press (claiming the whole 3G network is a hoax) and that is how we got to know about the problem. Turns out he had a dead data card......

Moral of the story is; report the problems as soon as possible please.

i.e. forumites must call 082155 & get suspected network probems logged :).

Not sure if this always works. Then I phone they said I must upgrade my SIM, and we all know that was BS.

It was only then started to post on Myadsl.co.za (and with the help of V3G) that my problem was taken serious.

Do not under estimate the power of forums like this :D

I know what you're saying, and yes by all means share your experiences here - that's what the forum is for :), but also call 082155 and get them to make a record of the problem and get a reference number - that way it is in Vodacom's system, and they can statistically look for trends in your area, which would help Vodacom in some way to track down the cause and extent of problems - I think that's what v3g was saying :).

I’m with you, and I did have my moments where I had great service from Vodacom support, just depends who you get on the other side. :)

True, with every call centre there are experienced call centre agents and less experienced agents, but if they are unable to solve the problem over the phone, then getting the problem logged and a reference number will result in logged problems receiving attention further up the support chain :).

Will do some more investigation and revert.

Any progress on your investigation?

It seems to take a very long time to get a straight forward answer, does Vodacom actually knows what is the status of there own network?

As I replied in post #28 above (few hours after you asked the first time), I checked with the various people and there is no general network problem, so I'm not to sure if I did not answer your question or if I missed what you're asking?

Not sure why you are confused. In post 19 I ask if you could be more specific, and you said "Will do some more investigation and revert."

I'm still waiting for an answer on your investigation

trws, won't you PM me a contact number and I'll give you a call? Will save us both a lot of typing... :)

Not sure why you want to take this off-line. There is clearly a network problem in Pretoria. You say it is not general, so I need to know how big the problem is.

To repeat my previous question: Is it one cell, two or ten cells which are affected? Could you also please let me know which areas are affected?
