Never, never never never use Afrihost for a VPS solution

Hey ghoti

Before you start throwing your proverbial toys out of the cot, speak to them first, and see what arrangements can be made.

Just my 0.05c.

May you have a good day :)

Hi,

Still waiting for them to respond. Thanks. Apparently they need over 2 hours to respond to a query. Will let you know.

Great, I hope you ask people who complain about Vodacoms OOB to do the same. Do you? Or does Afrihost have exception from your 0.05c and MTN and Vodacom dont?

I think a thread warning people about Afrihosts OOB, where they dont send notifications and hit you with a massive bill is important. Those "toys" as you so nicely put it are pretty important. For anyone who hosts a VPS this is a serious financial risk that you can be nailed with that people should be made aware of. As with Vodacoms OOB. Shared hosting VPS`s get hacked every day. This is a serious and real risk to almost anyone who has a VPS with shared hosting at Afrihost.

Ghoti, I totally agree with you regarding the risk being taken here. To simply be issued with an unexpected bill that may or may not result in some business cases as bankruptcy. People dont see it that way since they dont know about it. But it can happen.

I am also surprised that you would receive speedier service/support from a public forum than you would their official support channels :/

Oh well. Good luck mate.

I think the risk here can only be understood by people in the industry. You and I both know how quickly shared hosting gets hacked. People are way too lazy to update their Wordpress/Joomla websites and they get hacked. I know there is a recent Wordpress exploit that allows people to use an out dated Wordpress installation as a ddos zombie.

You literally can get TB bills very easily if some of those sites are hacked. VPS`s without warnings or hard caps are just too big a liability.

So what made it download so much? Torrents?

I dont know. Its a clients VPS. I dont go through clients stuff. Ive just switched it off for now.

I assume a hacked website. IE. Hacker exploits web site. Uploads some or other phishing page and then spams several million email from the vps telling people to click on the website that is hosted on the VPS.

I think you should have done this privately first, if you weren't getting much joy / resolution, then I would I go public...

Client had the same issue with their Amazon EC2 server.....$6000 later and no notification of over usage. A few TB can easily be used quickly.

Wow, I didn't know Amazon is also a criminal organisation like Afrihost ?

Since this kinda thing is the height of blatant fraud after all ?
