Remember to add the price of nearly R5000 for Windowzzzzzz Vista ultimate. The mac price includes OSX as well as Ilife and Iwork.

Who says I would want Vista Ultimate? Ubuntu is free :)

And I did add it, not R5000, OEM version is about R1 600...

Good point. An even better question to ask is if anyone here has made an internet purchase of over R20, 000.00 ? I will definitely check with my bank, but I just want to know if anyone has successfully purchased for over R20, 000.00 .

Locally yes - internationally with an international card yes - internationally with a local card no. :o

What is sure to please travellers abroad is the abolition of that annoying rule requiring you to sign a form allowing you to use your credit card overseas.

According to the Budget Review document, the Reserve Bank will, however, continue to monitor overseas credit card transactions to ensure that citizens do not exceed their limit. (One wonders if the Bank really has the manpower to do this.)

When you say international card, do you mean with an international bank?
 
Aha. Found this on the Reserve Bank website (should have went there first, really):

2.1.7 Payments by means of credit and/or debit cards
Cardholders in whose name one or more credit and/or debit cards have been issued will be allowed to make permissible foreign currency payments for small transactions e.g. imports over the Internet, by means of such credit and/or debit cards. Permissible transactions are those which may be effected by an Authorised Dealer in terms of the Exchange Control Rulings and clarity must therefore be obtained from an Authorised Dealer. Payments are limited to Rand 20000 per transaction. Cardholders will, however, not be absolved from ad valorem excise and custom duties or from complying with the requirements imposed by the customs authorities.

Now, on face value, it looks as if we're screwed (and I can't import that top-of-the-range Macbook Pro that I want). However, the stipulation states R20, 000.00 per transaction. You could expressly ask the e-tailer to split the transaction amount due into 2 amounts and debit your credit card twice (on 2 different days just to be safe).

This R20, 000.00 limit is probably enforced by your respective bank, so if you're making a transaction more than that threshold, alarm bells will probably start going off in their system(s).

Kewl. I suppose you have to physically be there (overseas) to apply for a credit card, i.e. you have to be at a branch of ABN Amro somewhere in the world to get a credit card?

in my visualisation of my intended migration to the uk next year.....i see what everyone is saying about how apple uk overcharges in comparison to us pricing, the top of the range 24" imac is about R7000 more in the uk than in the us.....because of the currency conversion.

Some banks don't require that. I never went to my bank to open my accounts. Did it all on the internet, and they mailed the cards and cheques to me shortly afterwards. I only once saw a branch office will walking through Annapolis, MD one day. Have even renewed debit and credit cards through mail while living in SA. Never get charged ATM/debit order/cash advance/monthly fees either despite living half way around the world from them! :D

But you have to have the right qualifications to be able to use these kind of banks.
 
Hey guys forgive me if this idea is stupid as all hell, I have indulged in some chocolate and Fanta Orange so I am high as a kite. I would love to pick me up a Mac Book Pro or Imac and it seems like a few of you do too, is there anyway to band together getting them shipped over here for a fraction of the cost? Someone must know of a good way, not a single forum member in the USA who could help us out?

I would be willing to try my hand at importing macs into SA if Apple let me, but wouldn't know where to start as I'm typing this. Further investigation would be needed.

As far as getting CMM a MBP or iMac, it might be hard to slip them through the airport customs people. How would I explain using three MBP's, a couple of iPods and a few Minis all in my carry on luggage let alone an iMac next month? ;) Suggestions?

BTW - hope you're only taking one suitcase otherwise the excess luggage fees on that iMac are gonna hurt . . .bad. :eek:

The British get totally ripped off on almost every imported good.
 
I've made several purchases in the R30k-R50k range while oversees on Nedbank issued cards (Visa and Amex).
