New Camera needed

this is such an old debated
digital makes mincemeat out of film because of functionality, for most applications
the very best landscape photographers in the world use medium and large format slide film
horses for courses
there is no perfect format for all applications
we use what is needed for the job
Again I ask the question: the best according to whom? If film was doing so well for such jobs, why would Hasselblad go to the extra expense of making high-end digital backs for their medium format cameras?

To whom ever I say. People are moving over from film to digital after many years of claiming its better (which it is not). Viewcamera is pretty much dead - the XP bliss background was a nice swansong. So soon people will leave SLR also for something more like an apple, you know, idiot proof and easy to use. :D
I very much doubt that...

People very much doubted that film would be replaced, and it si dying all the way. How many viewcameras do you still see around?

SLR is riddled with issues and the only thing that keeps it afloat is its perceived higher quality due to its higher price tag. Sure, at this stage it sounds like I am talking rubbish, SLRs do have far superior manual overrides and their larger sensors are way better than point and shoot models. But in a a decade or two I am certain that would change.

As sensors get better and the AI inside cameras get smarter the only thing where SLRs still will have the upper hand is the glass. But taking into account the first two I think more people will settle for prosumer stuff like she Canon SX1 than a SLR.

So maybe it won't die out completely - just become more a specialised tool and feel less hands of Joe Average on its body.

And oh my, I can talk a lot of junk when I have the time...

Nice to see your not such a fanboy that you would buy something just for the sake of the name and not the feel/functionality. :p:D
I said a while back that if Canon didnt respond to Nikon's offerings I'd consider ditching my gear and switching but (fortunately) they came out with the 5DMkII so I don't have to. :)

How many view cameras did you see before 2003?
View cameras!?

Eish, dude.
View cameras are for landscape, so unless you're at a place like the Grand Canyon, at sunrise or sunset, you're not going to see them too often. :D

If there is one thing i hate about the DSLR is that i have to keep manually setting it that i can manually focus it... I HATE camera's that autofocus because they just don't work properly it doesn't focus on what you want it to focus... so somehow i doubt AI will take over camera's

Cant you just set it to full time manual? All the canon lenses have switches and many of them let you manually override/tweak.

It is OK to admit that a machine can do a better job than you do. I came to that conclusion a long time ago. For example writing stuff on forums, I am pretty sure there are machines out there that can do a far better job that what I do :D

But seriously - don't be a control freak - junk your SLR and get a PS, let go of your natural obsession for control and let the machines take over, they know best ;)

there is a switch but once i switch it off then on again then the switch is on manual but i can't turn the focus only if i go onto auto then manual again.

you make a very valid point but i can't agree with you...

And then people wonder why movies are so krap thesedays...

If you want to irritate me you put a unfocused piece of footage on my tv. It is getting increasingly irritating...

The SLR is much easier to grip too makes me feel like i am holding something...

Strange - is it like that with all lenses?

You are holding something . . . your brother's camera . . . give it back! :p

I don't know only have one lens... its a bit frustrating but yeah

I will give it back in due time... did you check my photo's on flickr bwana?

there are times when you need a compact & times when you need an slr
you know very little about the speed deferences between compacts and slr
good luck with trying to do events/people/animals/sports with a compact

I don't think that will happen anytime soon. SLRs have grown enormously in popularity - much more so than the high-end pro-sumer cameras. Also, within the this section of the market (SLRs), full frame bodies have gotten a lot more popular, despite the price. And most of my camera buddies didn't shoot film - they started with digital point&shoots. Looking at the back of the camera to take a picture. And all of them love the real optical viewfinder.

Until something comes along that can replace an optical viewfinder adequately, SLRs won't go anywhere. And we're a very long way off with that.

EVF is pretty nice and apart from the new Nikon SLRs still cannot take videos. Why must I buy a device to do just one thing? If I buy a camera I expect it to take videos and pictures and do both of them well.
