new chromecast

Has anyone had problems recently with casting from Plex web app? Seems to have occurred in the last few days. On the weekend I uninstalled the casting extension and reinstalled and seemed fine for a bit, but has given the same problem again... any advice please. Checked the Plex forums, not much info there...

Im sure you tech savvy people know how to setup the CC easily, but i am battling my arse off. Can someone write up a point for point as like the Netflix guide? I have a samsung S5. Have unotelly, have netflix, just cant get the CC sequence right. Thanks oh and a samsung TAB

Lets see where you are first. Have you done the initial setup & update and connected it to your wifi and can stream YouTube without a problem?

Yup, can do all that.
Great that means you just have to setup your router. That means blocking the hard coded google DNS and redirecting it to your router, assuming you've setup the DNS in your router to unotelly DNS already. Have you setup your router with the unotelly DNS yet? Going to unotelly.com and logging in should then give you a message saying you're correctly setup.

What exactly is the issue? Do you get an error?

Yup. Set my DNS in my router.

just that....
I choose a file locally to watch in plex, then cast it, takes an age and says unable to cast. If I use videostream, it casts seamlessly.

Now the easy part!! Take down the mac of your chromecast its on the stick and the box and obviously in your router client table if it's connected.

In your router assign a static ip to that mac. Then reroute any traffic from that ip or mac to your router ip. And block the google dns ips.

I can't access unotelly at work but here: https://www.google.co.za/webhp?sour...8#safe=off&q=unotelly+chromecast+router+setup
Great. Will do that now. Next question. I will need to cast from my phone or Tablet to the CC (if i get it going correctly). How do i install the Netflix app on my phone? I have tried a few times to set up a USA based gmail account, but i keep getting Google Store locating my phone in SA, which prevents me from getting the app.

Do it proper :D -->
1. Get a US address and phone number

You could use the address of any restaurant or store in the United States, or if you want to be more precise and play it safe, you can sign up for your own US shipping forwarding address on Borderlinx or Shop and Ship for example. I did the latter because that is technically “my” address with “my” phone number.

2. Get a US debit card

In order to do this, you can ask a friend to get you a prepaid card issued in the US and send you its details. Or you could sign up for a virtual card on Entropay and fill it with some money.

3. Change your Google Wallet details

Go to your Google Wallet Payment Methods. There, you will find your current address and card details. Click to add a new credit or debit card and enter the US card information you got in Step 2. Make sure you associate this card with the billing address and phone number you got in Step 1. When you’re done, set this new payment method as the default one — don’t worry, you can switch back to your regular debit card later without losing the access to the US store.

4. Wait and cross your fingers
For US phone number I use Google Voice. Or grab the apk from apkmirror.com

Just get the apk from sites like apkmirror etc, don't have to jump through hoops

Just install Aptoide www.aptoide.com for region restricted apps

Threadjacking a bit....
But is there a way to get the Hulu or Netflix app on the Chromecast device itself? Or install it on your Android device and just cast from there to the CC device?

Yeah well, the chromecast is a bit mysterious here. As far as I understand the only "app" that is running on the CC is a browser (a custom version of Chrome), layered with some comms and authentication protocols. Seen very simplistically, any CC-enabled android app basically sends an URL to the CC to a custom HTML5 website. So i.e. netflix would need to host a CC compatible website on their server end. Your phone/tablet acts like a remote mouse and keyboard, sending instruction to the browser via your local WIFI network.

Beware the chromecast might be hungry! ~5GB pm when idle! I'll make a seperate post about it.

Huh?

Anyways. Just bought one of these after my old Chromecast fried.

WiFi network seems a bit more spiffy. I had to use the extender on the old one.

I also like the flexible cabling thing because I use the port behind the TV (TV mounted on wall).
