New DSTV HD Decoder

It's pretty clearly spelt out in the decoder literature and DSTv Website that the R65 is for PVR functionality. I just insisted that they confirm their own terms and apply them accordingly.

Don't give in, call them up and demand that they drop the fee. I've had a high quality VCR hooked up to my system for well over a decade, but I haven't used it to record anything for so long that the time doesn't even blink 00:00 anymore. The display battery has died.
I have no need of PVR and don't see the need to pay extra for it. As it stands I've got loads of DVDs/Blu-rays that I still need to catch up on.

Did you tell them you are only using a single lnb?

Never came up, and why should it matter? I'm going to add a splitter to the SAT-input cable and see if it makes any difference to the decoder. My LNB is at least 12 years old now and I don't see a need to change.

If you look at the channel listing for Premium subs, you'll find all three HD channels there, as well as pretty clear reference in the HD PVR FAQ (#13) that says that the access fee is for recording ie PVR, not for HD access.

I think that MC don't try too hard to advertise that fact since it's a lot more lucrative to get people to pay extra for what they should be getting as part of their basic subscription.

yeh, I agree,...its rediculous to HAVE to pay and extra R65 to use the PVR functionality. You are already paying a premium for the decoder that has a harddrive in bigger power supply etc....but you can't use that feature if you don't 'subscribe'....weird....who the hell thought of that..? Telkom?

Anyways, I've got xtraview, so the PVR functionality IS included in the R65 'xtraview/pvr/whatever crap here' fee...

Has anyone using a single lnb figuered out if there is a way to get the TV guide to work properly. Mine only shows the next two shows and nothing after that

Do a rescan Tim, Advanced Options (9949) > Network settings

I did, still the same issue. It's no big deal but would be nice to figure it out, wanna organise a proper guide for everyone sometime. I wonder if a splitter would help...

I'm unsure about this decoder. I've been reading this thread and people are complaining about the HD quality as opposed to the big daddy hdpvr. I've got the big daddy pace pvr and it looks awesome on my 42". Looking to get one for my folks so need to know if there is degraded video/audio on the baby pace.

Smurfatefrog do you have one of these baby pace hdpvrs? Whats your verdict? Is it a bad setup/signal for these users who are complaining or is there legitimately an issue with these baby decoders doing 720p. I trust your judgment.

Mike, I don't believe there is any difference in HD picture between all 3 of the HDPVRs. I've been using baby Pace for 2 or 3 weeks now & can confidently say there is no difference. The UEC's font & menus have a different texture & sharper feel to them but that's about it

I also can't say that I can see any difference to my friend's using the big PVR. I got the small one yesterday. Sound using optical is very good, picture varies depending on what show you are watching. Some movie last night wasn't great but the next one was cristal sharp again... So the picture quality really does not depend on the decoder.

My BABY PVR is hooked up to a 42inch LG SCARLET LCD TV and the Roland Garos tennis which is on Supersport HD at the moment is BRILLIANT. Watched some Time Warp earlier on Discovery HD and it felt like it was happening in my lounge. My verdict is that the baby's picture is just as good as the other 2 PVR's and my folks have a Pace HD so I have seen that in action.

The Now/Next info plays out on each channel. You wont get the extra info without having the second LNB cable.

Do you know if a simple splitter would work? So single lnb with a splitter before the decoder? Just to get the TV guide info....

i genuinely think it's TV related
I have 42" HD ready plasma with baby PVR and outshines Full HD lcd with 5ms response time (lagging) on Daddy PVR
Also it's a known fact that Progressive scan perform better than interlaced 720p vs 1080i

Thanks for the info guys. Will def be getting the baby HD-PVR. Since R1999 is the RRP i'm sure game, dion wired or makro will have it on sale for about R1500 (I hope) :D

I've spent some more time with the Baby Pace and haven't experienced the frame-dropping again - maybe it was just a Multichoice problem.

IMO the HD quality is pretty good, but I have never used the original HD PVR's, so have nothing to compare it against. It's not nearly as good as a Blu-ray disc, but that is true 1080/60i, so that is only to be expected.

I use the sound via the optical connection and that is very good. I'm happy with the RF quality.

The Splitter would would for sure, now that means, Tuner 4 which is used in Daddy HD PVR, is combined with Tuner 2, on the Baby HD PVR, so via the splitter, you should get your 24 EPG on your I-plate :) just fool it
