New Esquire PSU Smoking

So i bought a Unique Case with PSU from Esquire 6 days ago.
Only got to assemble PC yesterday - (basic setup) Celeron, 2GB Ram, CD/DVD-Writer, 500GB HD.
Started up fine & after 5 minutes PSU starts smoking (like a smoke machine) hehehe...

So proceeded to take it back to Esquire today, was there for all of 40 odd minutes.
They called up & down, tested it. Then said its working fine.
So tell me would you accept this knowing you saw this thing smoking & might damaged your other components if used again?
Left the damn thing there, they can sell it to some other sucker.

Their (as pointed out by MickeyD) warranty policy sucks donkey bawls.
Will grab a PSU from Rectron later today, less hassles.

Its probably some plastic tape that got too hot and it may have burned out completely at your place. Still, I would've also returned it!
 
The thing still smells of smoke/burned smell. It was not a little smoke either, pity i didnt take a pic.
First reaction was to switch off & disconnect.

Its not meant to be a workhorse as per clients request.

Yeah, I would also be pissed off. I have bought a few of them over the years... no problems where they are being used but in my personal PCs I go for a better quality PSU.
 
I do the same for myself, Case & PSU always bought seperately & brand i know.
Which usually lasts for for years or until i decide to upgrade again.

Even though you recommend a different (pricier) product the client will most of the time choose to save a bit with a cheaper "inferior" product.
That's why i no longer focus my business on hardware, more on support & training.
And for large orders (30+ pc's) usually use Mecer as they do most everything for you (i am getting lazy).
 
As per my technical manager Ruben and Warrick in Port Elizabeth branch they have tested the power supply for almost an hour after you left and cannot find nothing wrong with the power supply , the smoke could have come from something else
I have asked them to keep the power supply on the test bench running with the workshop PC for the whole day and will contact you once they satisfied that that nothing is wrong it but so far it there is no issues with it

Ask the techi to smell the thing easy as that.

Just to let you know that we have already sold over 1000 units of these cases in the last two months and have not had a single power supply failure on any of those sold so far

Just to let you know that we have already sold over 1000 units of these cases in the last two months and have not had a single power supply failure on any of those sold so far

Would it not be better for business to swap it out for the customer? It is day 6? Why should he be inconvenienced when it's a new product? Even if you sold 100,000 without return it doesn't mean that one unit cannot be faulty, right? Why would customers be confident buying new products from esquire, if they experience a fault or intermittent fault, the customer is inconvenienced with hours of tests, instead of a working product. What is the returns policy? Zero returns unless DOA?

No it would not be better to replace a PSU that is in working condition and testing just fine.

How on earth do you figure they should replace it, do you think rectron or any other supplier will return or replace a working component?

If it has been tested and the esquire guy is telling the truth(doubt he would lie) regarding the PSU why are they the bad guys for refusing to replace a component that they cannot find a fault with? Take the pc to esquire get the PSU unit installed and let them keep it 24 hours if it fries your pc they must replace it :D.

Checked all components & works fine.
Why don't you just open the PSU & check for melted/bare wires? Or if anything else that could have burned in there.
Just take care when touching those capacitors ;)
Just because you sold 1000 units does not mean there could be one that is bad.
You can keep it, give it away to a charity. Maybe later it would be the frontpage - Charity burned down, faulty donated PSU from Esquire.

I have come across instances like this where the customer swears that the unit is borked/misbehaving even though all evidence says otherwise.

In cases like that (where we are then able to resell the unit) we will try to assist as far as possible and swop it out with one off the shelf. Customer goes home happy and you get to keep a customer who isn't holding a grudge against you/ the company/ brand.
