So , what ISP do u think must i get for my gaming rather??

What new cable?

334ms to the US ain't bad I'm afraid, what were you expecting?

What new cable? IS uses the same SAT3 cable that Telkom uses. Always have.

If you are talking about the new Seacom cable... that hasn't gone live yet.

Unfortunately, you'll have to blame the size of the earth. Much of the latency between SA and New York is in the physical length of the cable (speed of light in glass, basically). SEACOM and SAT-3 both link SA to Europe, and they are both about the same length. You'll get much the same latency via Europe to New York on either cable - you'd have to move SA closer to the US to make it any shorter.

Well I for one would like to know what this line then means:

mi-za-rba-p6-gi0-1-6.ip.isnet.net

rba = rosebank
mi?? sounds a lot like mtunzini?

Then again its in the wrong location to stand for that.

330ms to the US is not that good, its very average to bad for a unshaped account.

160ms to the UK is close to good.
250ms to the US is close to good (based on Atlanta)

That is real unshaped latency from SA.

where u choose ur package in the drop down at openweb, it explains what u get, and the fibre acc says its a "new" sat 3 cable. good for gaming.

then their is unshapped acc's what state its "exellent" for gaming..will this also give same ping about?

You Google server ain't in New York where the cable lands. You still have to account for the journey to the midwest or even the west coast, which can add up to 50ms in both directions! The US, she ain't a schmall lady.

EDIT: I know for a fact that you can't really get less than 300ms to the WoW servers in Texas, as such 300-350ms to Atlanta ain't a bad ping.

Not impossible, but remember that the existing SAFE cable also lands at Mtunzini...
Fair enough. Then the 350ms makes 100% sense, in which case his traffic is not going over SAT3 which have the better latencies.

Alright, google has multiple data centres, sometimes our traffic goes to the US sometimes it goes to the UK. I know this because I had access to a dedicated server in Netherlands and latencies to it was below 5ms and about 4-5 hops away.

I also specified atlanta as its closer to the east coast which gives better latencies.

As for WoW, it really depends, I have seen pings to europe servers at 213-280ms on a good day. Then thinking that the server was fully loaded and is not in london at the landing point but instead in france...that latency makes 100% sense. Distance overseas also adds up to the latency, but we shouldn't inflate it.

Again, I forgot about SAFE, and that could explain his latency.

Will be interesting to see what happens to that latency though when Seacom does go live.

I am getting 281 ms to Diablo 2's US East server... Is that good?

it's not bad, reasonable average... but when Seacom goes live we are hoping that the latency will drop below 100. Seacom's tests have shown latencies of 80 ms.

Thats 281 ms ping... not latency.

Yeah I saw on their blog. I also registered there :D. So if I apply logic here, the European Battle.net server will have the least latency? Seeing as Seacom lands in France? Or Asia even... Mumbai.

Does this mean that the previous Battle.net server (US East & US West) that was the fastest for us will now be the slowest when compared to Asia and Europe? :(

That would suck because my Diablo II clan is in US East.

ummm... ping measures the round trip latency

Many software platforms provide a service called ping that can be used to measure round-trip latency.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latency_(engineering)

Ping is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network; it is also used to self test the network interface card of the computer, or as a latency test.

I know lol I thought you meant it took me 281ms for the one way trip when I meant the round trip :D

Sorry for the confusion lol.

Are you saying that I will get better ping if I get my 4mb line? Currently using Amobia Wireless @ 128/512.

For some reason they took it upon themselves to block ports for

Battle.net
Xbox LIVE

Which... is fail. So now I am leaving them for G-Connect (won R1000 with them - but I am confident I will stay there for the rest of my days). You pay prepaid and then you can spend that prepaid on 3G, Wi Fi and ADSL. Perfect for me when I am on the move.

I don't think the latency of your line will be much better if you use 4 mbps rather than one of the lower line speeds.

Won't I score a few ms for negating the wireless part of my connection

Flame ping the same Google IP address to test your result not two different IP - 2 different routes.

No, IS traffic used to go via Satellite, but they launched a "new" product a few months back. They gained access to the SAT3 cable and started selling bandwidth over it.

So, that "new" part is old ;)
