New Ford Everest

Well took ownership of a 2x4 Bi-Turbo XLT on Saturday...can't actually compare it to the 2.2 I had previously, we're talking worlds apart here in terms of performance an overall feel.

Ford should be shot for placing a 103kw engine in the Everest body when they have so much more available.

Still miffed though that the Sport doesn't come in the Bi-Turbo but I'd rather have this engine every day of the week instead of the black styling.

Ford Everest Sport (2021) Launch Review

Ford has expanded its locally-produced 7-seater Adventure SUV range through the addition of a pair of purposeful-looking Everest Sport derivatives. We drove the Everest Sport in and around Oudtshoorn to find out if the Sport badge is appropriate.

Ford Everest Sport Quick Verdict

By introducing these cosmetic enhancements, Ford has made the Everest a bit more desirable on an emotional level, which should generate more showroom traffic for the Blue Oval. Given how the market is pushing for personalisation, it's good to see OEMs reacting. We all know that when Ford owners were putting bigger bold aftermarket grilles onto their bakkies, Ford reacted by offering the Raptor grille as an option. We suspect more than a few Everest Sports will be sold based on its kerb presence alone. Those wheels and that grille paired with a vivid paint finish will make for an eye-catching combination.

We know the Everest is a more-than-capable offering, with a runner-up position in this year's Adventure SUV Category #CarsAwards – powered by WesBank to show for its efforts, but the additional go-faster bits may garner it even a few more fans. The Everest Sport has been cleverly positioned between the biturbo derivatives, which, unless you're regularly towing big trailers, are overkill. The single-turbo setup is the sweet spot, but whether you go 4x4 or 4x2 will depend on your personal preference. If you consider driving down a gravel road as off-roading, then there's nothing wrong with the 4x2 version.

How much does the Ford Everest Sport cost in South Africa?

All Everest derivatives come standard with Ford Protect, comprising a 4-year/120 000 km comprehensive warranty, 3-year/unlimited distance roadside assistance and 5-year/unlimited km corrosion warranty. A 6-year/90 000 km service plan is included, with service intervals of 15 000 km.

DRIVEN: Ford Everest Sport deserves to succeed

The Everest Sport comes standard with Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system and while it’s been around for a while now, it’s still one of the best in the business when it comes to features and user-friendly logical ease of use. Linked to an eight-inch integrated touch screen, it has intuitive voice control, recognises multi-touch gestures such as swipe, slide, scroll and pinch-to-zoom and has standard mapping as well as Tracks4Africa for when you venture far off the beaten track.

To keep all seven occupants safe there’s the Electronic Stability programme with traction control, Trailer Sway Control, Hill Launch Assist and Roll Over Mitigation as well as seven airbags.

As a package there’s not much to dislike about the Everest Sport and it will be interesting to see over the next few months whether buyers can be swayed into the blue oval.

DRIVEN: Ford Everest Sport 2,0 SiT 4WD AT

Arriving at George Airport, we were met with a fleet of Ford Everest Sports, the latest edition to the Blue Oval brand’s local Everest line-up. Parked alongside the XLT derivative on which it is based, the Sport’s exterior is distinguished by the addition of a black “Everest” badge on the bonnet, sited above a distinct black mesh grille, and myriad trim items finished in the same hue to give the seven-seater SUV a sporty appearance. These include the mirror caps, door handles, roof rails and rear valence. “Sport” decals can be found on the bottom of the rear doors and on the tailgate. A set of 20-inch alloy wheels, finished in black, completes the look.

We loaded our travel bags into the spacious luggage compartment of our Diffused Silver Ford Everest Sport press unit. Five other exterior colour options are on offer: Frozen White, Agate Black, Moondust Silver, Sea Grey and Copper Red. Open the door via keyless entry and you’ll notice the interior has also received some Sport-specific updates. Generously equipped as standard, the Sport’s leather-trimmed cabin is set apart from the XLT’s by blue contrast stitching for the multifunction steering wheel, facia and seats. The most notable item, however, is the “Sport” namesake embossed on the front pews’ backrests.

Spy Shots: 2023 Ford Everest

The 2023 Ford Everest has been spotted in full camouflage, confirming that the all-new model is on its way.

The Ford Everest is essentially a 7-seater SUV built on the Ford Ranger bakkie platform. Sold as a rival to the popular Toyota Fortuner, the Everest also has to contend with rivals in the form of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Haval H9 and Isuzu MU-X. In 2021, Ford SA introduced the Everest Sport, with a cosmetic upgrade.

The 2023 Ford Everest was recently spotted on the roads around Ford’s facility in Dearborn, Michigan. Like the all-new Ford Ranger (which will also underpin the all-new Volkswagen Amarok) and be sold as a global model, the Ford Everest is expected to follow a similar strategy.

ROAD TEST: Ford Everest Sport 2,0 SiT 4WD 10AT

TEST SUMMARY

The Ford Everest with the 2,0 SiT beneath its bonnet is a compelling offering that provides decent performance, impressive efficiency and satisfying drivability. So much so, it’s exterior makeover. The decision to go with road-biased tyres has reduced its appeal and may eliminate the more adventurous buyers out there … until they fit a pair of aftermarket tyres more suited to the Sport appearance.

900km of scenic driving through the Western Cape in Ford's capable Everest

• Goodyear put its latest products, the Efficient Grip 2 SUV tyres, to the test.

• The tyres were fitted to Ford's Everest SUV and taken on a 900km trip, consisting of both tar and gravel.

• The Everest XLT and Everest Sport were used for the excursion.

Summary

We often drove these vehicles harder and faster than prospective owners would. Still, they impressed in several ways. Even with enthusiastic driving, the average diesel consumption was just over 9.0-litres/100km, for both the single- and bi-turbodiesel variants. Sand driving, for example, will be a completely different ball game with these tyres, but for gravel road driving, a good on-road tyre such as this one did a very respectable job. The trip clearly illustrated that you don't necessarily need another set of tyres if you want to venture off the beaten track, exploring the beauty South Africa has to offer.

Next-generation Ford Everest rendered based on Ranger design cues

Now that we have officially seen the new design of the upcoming next-generation Ranger, some digital artists have put together a rendition of what the next-generation Ford Everest could look like. The digital impression not only adds the new face to the SUV body but also displays key cues that could be applied exclusively to the more practical off-roader.

As penneed by SRK Design, the Ford Everest render sports the C-shaped headlamps of the Ranger but the biggest difference between the SUV and the bakkie is the chrome grille and detailing that surrounds it. This is accentuated by a slightly different lower air intake, foglamp housing and anti-scuff plate.

The rest of the SUV boasts the same design cues as the Ford Ranger that sits on dealership floors today with a conventional bodystyle accentuated by satin silver roof rails and door mirror covers. Alloy wheels, plastic wheel arch cladding and a runner board are included as well.

4X4 ADVENTURE: famous passes in Ford Everests with Goodyear EfficientGrip 2 tyres

As we cruised towards Cape Town and with flights changed to early the next morning, we had a chance again to reflect on how magnificent our country is and how privileged we are to have seen and experienced much of it this time round in the very comfortable Everest, shod with some decent rubber on each corner.
