Our pool is only open when we or our oldest son want to swim, it is closed at all other times. I take no chances, I have a work colleague who lost her 3 year old daughter to their pool, in a matter of minutes.

I heard a horror story from a colleague who lost his little one and it scared the heck out of me

that cover is useless for keeping leaves out of the pool - most people installed in when the City was threatening fines and to help a bit with evaporation.

not too sure how useful it is from a safety perspective either
 
Will start with the PVC cover for now. Just good a very good quote for one.
We are moving in a week or so and with Winter around the corner, there will be so swimming for the foreseeable future anyway so I'm guessing the cover will pretty much stay on permanently.

Will assess the need for fence when spring hits
 
yeah you in no rush so get few quotes and all and go from there

if you have no money for heating try solar heating as well if you want

its around R7k for a 6*3 ..the smaller the cheaper the bigger the more expensive

Not related to this thread, but does the solar heating work ? How much rise in temperature are we talking about ?
I found it too expensive to run, I have a 65000 liter pool, with solar heating. 2.5kwh motor. Running it for the entire time when the sun is up is expensive. Lets say I run it for 10 hours, that's like 20 units of electricity.
 
I have 3 small kids, and I am extremely paranoid about pool safety (a colleague of mine recently lost his son due to no precautions taken to secure the pool, extremely hard lesson that I do not wish on anyone).

My 2 older ones (6yr and 9yr) are very competent, my 3yr old is only learning now.

I opted for a fence, for the following reason:
  • It is a physical barrier that is difficult to get around
  • If you need to leave the pool area briefly, you can quickly close/lock the gate (e.g. kids want to eat inside, one of them craps themselves etc.) - you cannot quickly do that with a cover - you will inevitable be away from the pool while it's uncovered at some stage (that is when things go wrong, and very quickly)
  • I might have visitors with little kids, or kids that can't swim
  • A cover is a pain in the ass in terms of taking on/off, and the larger ones with galvanized poles need 2 strong people to move
I agree that the PVC cover serves a dual purpose in terms of safety and pool maintenance (evaporation and debris).

Ideally get both, fence for proper security, cover for maintenance purposes.

For reference had 40 meters of fencing with 2 gates installed and painted, cost was R26k (this was in Joburg)

Check bylaws before doing anything , a pool cover nust be ale to hold a certain weight with a ball in the middle

For now, going with the cover as it will stay on permanently throughout Winter.
When spring comes, will look at the fence.

26k is a good price when I compare it to the R25k quote I got for 20 meters of fencing with one gate, not painted.

so it summer my pool pump ran for around 7 hours for the day and the temp would go up to 30 degrees

sometime too hot for summer

i also didnt have a pool cover

so if you include a pool cover it would be better

Rather opt for a closed pool cover like Power Plastics. And its simple to even DIY and save extra costs. It would be able to withstand even and adult weight as well.
 
I will soon be in the same situation, no real little ones around, don't really have friends with little ones, the ones there are have all been taught to swim. Is there a legal requirement to secure/protect/cover a pool?
 
PVC pool cover is best, saves lives, chemicals, cleaning, water etc.

Hopefully the pool is a easy shape. (round, square, triangle or rectangle with paving all around.

The best and cheapest way.

In Cape Town there is. Not sure about the rest of the country.
