New Keyboard, iTouch and Leopard

Aah, click. Well there's the problem. For all the windows-hate in the world, it's still possible to operate the GUI entirely without a mouse.

Every time I have to take my hand off the keyboard to operate the mouse, even for one click, it slows me down.

Its still not reason enough to ever get me to switch back :)
 
bwana, if I was switching from a Windows desktop to a Mac, the lack of certain keyboard functionality would be vastly outweighed by the lack of virus/malware, increased stability, etc.

But as it is I havent touched or seen Windows for almost a year now, and haven't used it as a desktop for more than 5 years. At work I use Debian with KDE. This combination presents me with several things to long for under OSX. Not the least of all being the highlight&middleclick way to copy&paste...

Got myself a new keyboard for my Mini. I don't really understand the complaints about the keys. They're not different from any notebook I've worked. Just the Return key is somewhat narrow to my taste - it took about 2 minutes of typing to not hit the pipe/backslash accidentally. Anyway, it's really nice, I already don't think I can go back to my old one. It actually feels like I'm typing faster on this one. It feels more fluid.

Something to be aware of - it takes a 20mb odd download via Software Update to make the volume/media keys work.

Something else. While in the store, waiting for one of the clerks to pay, I had a quick play with an iTouch. Maaaaaannnnn!! It's nice! I didn't really play much with the iPod part of it though - went straight for Safari. It's really usable. By default it shows you the whole page scaled down. Give it some finger stretching (like with photos) and it zooms in. It's the real Safari running - everything I've tried worked as expected.

I also had a quick look at the new iPod Nano - just to see the video playback. I was really disappointed in my phone's capability. It can only do 3gp or whatever format, which is rather low quality. A Seinfeld episode fits into 14MB, to give you an idea. And it looks horrible. And the sound is 8bit mono and of such poor quality it doesn't even sound like Jerry Seinfeld.

So I was keen to see the video on the Nano. Marvellous! They have some demos on - rather high quality video. Looks great, sounds great!

If I wasn't planning on picking up an iPhone in November I would have bought the Nano today.

Oh, one last thing. Asked the clerk when Leopard was coming, since I don't see it mentioned on Apple's website. He said "end of October" and "that usually means in the last week."
