New M3 range

SSDs have a finite life and with each write cycle that life is shortened. That's different to every other part of the computer. M1 Macs are still quite new, but will they fail in say 2-3 years from now, especially 8GB 256GB storage models? For a "forever" machine, a soldered on SSD won't do. Give all else being equal, a slotted SSD would be better, and it would be better for the planet too, as the whole machine will need to be trashed if only the SSD fails.

I've lost 15% of SSD life on a 2 year old 2TB OWC SSD (according to DriveDx) on a machine which gets used little. I'm not really concerned because it will take me all of 5 minutes to replace this SSD.

Everything has a finite life.

By that logic we shouldn’t buy anything.

It’s a non issue. I’ve got a few hundred in the field of the 8GB variety and still waiting for a single SSD failure among them.

Your 15% life lost is a prediction, not a fact of reality.

I do too and I disagree.

I suspect you guys (you and Sauron) are influenced by Apple marketing and are Apple fans, defending the company, no matter what. I don't have brand loyalty. The typical Apple fan response is when it comes to lower specs is, it's good enough, and this kind of cult like thinking is well cult like.

You use logic poorly. Maybe you're a good IT guy at your company but logic is not your strong point.

Depends on how they're used. Also I would think that 256 whole SSD wipes and re-writes would be less damaging than constant swap to an almost full 256 GB SSD.

Not a fact of reality? It is a fact of reality, that's the manufacturer's prediction. That's the info we work with.

Considering I have both an 8GB and a 16GB and can’t perceive a real world difference I’ll argue it doesn’t matter to the vast majority of people out there.

A pro device should have pro features. Yes vast majority do basic things and they don't even need a Mac. They should be running cheaper PCs.

Lol I wonder why I called them out on the 3gb in my iPad and the SE 2020 then. To each their own.

First I've heard of that app - apparently I've "lost" 1% on my 1.0 TB Apple NVMe Q-series SSD after more than two years of heavy use.

I wasn't concerned before, now even less so.

16GB doesn’t make it more Pro.

It’s everything else like the colour accurate screen, solid processor, fast SSD, crazy battery and the solid reliability that makes it Pro.

Not every Pro needs 16GB, which is why not every Pro buys one.

It seems to me that anyone who enjoys using their Apple product, and doesn’t have any issues with it, is doomed to being branded a fanboi defending the company

Of course, my investment portfolio is full of Apple shares.

What they don’t know is that it’s full of Google, Microsoft and virtually every other technology company as well.

I’ve just managed thousands of Apple (and other) devices at scale for over two decades, what the **** do I know.

Lol, you are of course meant to know every niggle and irk of every YouTube reviewer and join in with the Apple hate pile on whether they affect you or not. Even if you are happy with your product and you don’t recognise said irks, you have to nod enthusiastically at all criticism, spit on Steve Jobs grave and self flagellate daily.

My M1 Mac Air 8GB/256GB bought April 2021:

At this rate, I should have until around the year 2120 or thereabouts before I start to worry (not that I think the SSD life on my M1 would be high on that list at that point in time).

That sounds pretty arrogant to me but what are the requirements for needing a mac? And what happens if they just want a mac, instead of some crappy cheaper pc?
