Watch new Mahindra Thar undergo its Global NCAP crash test

Global NCAP has released the results of its safety evaluation of the new Mahindra Thar, with the Indian-built model scoring an “encouraging” four stars.

Tested in its “basic safety specification” with two airbags, the new Thar was awarded four stars for adult and child occupancy safety. Interestingly, Global NCAP said the vehicle also “comfortably passed” the side impact UN 95 regulation test.

The safety authority said it tested the Thar’s electronic stability control “according to UN regulation”, too. The system is not fitted as standard in India and although the model met minimum regulatory requirements, it showed an “unstable dynamic behaviour”, with Global NCAP recommending a “review and improvement”.

Global NCAP’s report said the driver and passenger’s heads and necks received “good” protection in the 64 km/h frontal offset crash test. The driver’s chest was offered “adequate” protection and passenger chest enjoyed “good” protection.

The new models seem quite nice and I'm considering one over a Suzuki Jimny.
 
Production in India seems backlogged and no exports are currently taking place as a result… this may only make it to SA by 2022 I guess…
 
Lovit, Wish I could get one of these. I owned the previous one and loved it. Will probably not buy this one as I currently have an old 4x4 that I don't owe the bank a cent for so that kind of holds me back a lot.
But still think this new Thar will be really cool to have. If its priced the same as the new Jimny and I could choose then I would again choose the Thar over the Jimny any day.
 
Any updates on local availability yet? Mahindra dealers couldn't even be bothered to reply to my mails...
 
Mahindra confirms new Scorpio and XUV700 flagship for South Africa

While it might not be growing at the same headline-grabbing pace as Chinese firms like Haval, India’s Mahindra is a brand to watch.

The 4x4 specialist has been gradually growing its footprint in South Africa, having sold a monthly average of over 1000 units in the first quarter of 2022, which saw the manufacturer sell a total of 3306 units. And at the end of the last financial year, the brand had grown by 37.4% versus the preceding period.

This impressive growth is largely thanks to the increasing popularity of the Scorpio Pik-Up, which is partially locally assembled, and which found 711 new homes last month, but the KUV100 and XUV300 compact crossovers have also been achieving reasonably good numbers, the latter closing on the 200 mark last month.

Now Mahindra is turning its attention to larger SUV products, with news that the new-generation Scorpio and XUV700 are set to hit local shores.

Mahindra South Africa has not provided a timeline as yet, but it has said that the XUV700 will reach our shores first.

Revealed in India last year, the Mahindra XUV700 replaces the XUV500 and boasting more than 60 new ‘connected car features’ it is by far the most advanced vehicle that Mahindra has ever produced. Available features include a Sony 3D surround sound system, a whole suit of driver assist systems, 360-degree surround view parking and a wide dashboard screen that includes both infotainment and digital instrumentation.

On the engine front, Mahindra is offering a revised 2.2-litre unit in 114kW/360Nm and 136kW/450Nm guises as well as a 2.0-litre turbopetrol that produces 147kW and 380Nm.

The new Mahindra Scorpio is yet to be revealed, but it is expected to slot beneath the XUV700 and while it should offer a similar engine line-up to the latter, the newcomer will reportedly be built around an updated ladder frame structure shared with the new Thar.

Sadly, however, there is currently no word on whether the new Mahindra Thar, which could make an interesting alternative to the Suzuki Jimny with its baby-Wrangler looks, is heading to South Africa.

Mahindra Thar 5 door global unveil on August 15 in South Africa - Autocar India​

The Thar 5-door will go on sale next year; will come with 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol engines.

Mahindra will unveil the long-awaited Thar 5-door at its annual Independence Day event this year. This will be the fourth instance where Mahindra will reveal a new product on August 15 – in 2020, the new Thar made its global debut; the XUV700’s world premiere followed in 2021; and last year, its born-electric concepts were unveiled in the UK. This year's event will take place in South Africa.

The South Africa unveiling is also significant as the country is expected to be one of Thar's global markets. Mahindra has had a presence there since 1996 and has seen a recent uptick in business.

The brand is thus looking to introduce the Thar to its SUV line-up in South Africa, where it currently sells the XUV300, the XUV700 and the Scorpio N.

The 5-door version is a logical extension of the Thar product line and will mean that the Mahindra off-roader can appeal to a broader audience – those seeking a tough, go-anywhere SUV but with added comfort and practicality for the entire family too. Something that the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Jimny offers.

The Thar though will sit a segment above. On offer will be larger engines – the same 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol engines from the 3-door Thar. 3

The 5-door Thar would also be significantly larger than the 3,985mm length of the 5-door Jimny and will be wider and taller too at 1,820mm and 1,850mm; the Jimny comes in at 1,645mm and 1,720mm, respectively.

Also unlike the 4-passenger layout of the Jimny and the 3-door Thar, the 5-door Thar will almost certainly seat five, and there’s also the possibility of a third row given the added length.

Following its debut, the 5-door Thar will see its market launch in India sometime in 2024, as was previously confirmed by Rajesh Jejurikar, executive director & CEO (Auto and Farm Sector), Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd.

Mahindra Thar 5-door To Be Revealed in SA

The offroad-focused Mahindra Thar family will be expanding with a new 5-door model. The interesting part is the Indian-based brand has chosen South Africa for the reveal.

The news comes from Autocar India, who claim the new Mahindra Thar will be revealed in South Africa on the 15th August 2023.

As a reminder, the Mahindra Thar is a rugged two-door offroader in the same vein as the Suzuki Jimny. The current generation model was revealed back in the middle of 2020 and we had hopes that it would be introduced to our market. Sadly, it has not yet materialised, but three years on, the Mahindra Thar family is due to receive a five-door model.

Indian firm's rugged electric Jeep Wrangler rival tops range of SUVs in line for European launch

Indian auto giant Mahindra has unwrapped the radical Thar.e concept as a vision of a rugged electric 4x4 that could go on sale in the UK by the end of the decade.

The Mumbai-based firm – one of India's largest automotive companies – showed the Thar.e in Cape Town this week as part of a wide-reaching preview of its electric vehicle strategy, which included confirmation that it is eyeing an expansion into the European and UK markets.

Mahindra already has a presence in the UK, through its Oxfordshire-based Advanced Design centre and Formula E team. Unwrapping five new UK-designed electric SUVs at the Banbury site last year, Mahindra bosses told Autocar that they were considering a UK market launch towards the end of the decade, if the market conditions were right.

Mahindra Vision Thar.e Concept debuts in SA with tough looks, electric power

Perhaps resembling a shrunken military vehicle of sorts, the Mahindra Thar.e Concept is an interesting new compact SUV with some interesting new ideas.

Unveiled to the world alongside the new Global Pik Up Concept at the company’s FutureScapes event held in Cape Town this week, the Thar.e represents Mahindra’s vision for a battery-powered compact SUV.

Built on the firm’s new INGLO-born electric vehicle platform, which shares components with Volkswagen’s MEB architecture, the Vision Thar.e features adaptable, modular and swappable components.

Mahindra hasn’t released any performance specifications as yet, but does promise a “cutting edge, high-performance AWD electric powertrain”.
