New Mahindra Thar

"Ergonomically, the cabin is poorly resolved. From behind the steering wheel, the rev counter and speedometer are partly obscured, and the gearlever is very close to the end of the handbrake lever. Selecting reverse painfully sandwiches your thumb between the gearstick and handbrake. The B-pillar mounting point for the seatbelt is also too far forward, resulting in a belt that doesn't run over the top of your chest and shoulder like it should. Furthermore, should you wish to drive at night, the headlamps offer minimal illumination."

"Once on the move, the gearbox allows for fairly slick and direct shifts once warmed up, while the 2,5-litre turbodiesel pulls with sufficient vigour to easily stay with traffic up until about 100 km/h. Above that point, however, you need to abandon any ideas of overtaking traffic."

"Without ABS, the braking times were very poor and, on some of the stops, the wheels tended to lock up."

Any changes on the "new" 2019 model ? Not.... I'll stick with my 2003 Hardbody.

There is a thread on 4x4community.co.za where there are very valid real life opinions rating the Thar way better than the previous Jimny off road .

These Indian guys don't worry about airbags and ABS , and just enjoy these vehicles for what it is , and enjoying the great outdoors :

New Mahindra Thar revealed! Fresh engines, improved safety and more

The new Mahindra Thar has been revealed, with the second-generation version of the body-on-frame off-roader billed as taking a “quantum leap” forward.

Some ten years after the arrival of the original Thar, the Indian firm says the new version has been designed to appeal to both “die-hard enthusiasts” and those seeking a “contemporary SUV”.

The Thar has grown slightly compared with its forebear (overall length has increased from 3 920 mm to 3 985 mm), with Mahindra claiming it benefits from a “wider, better-balanced stance”. It will be offered with a choice of hardtop and convertible roof options.

So, what about engine options? Well, while the outgoing Thar is powered by a 79 kW/247 N.m 2,5-litre turbodiesel, the new model will be offered with either a box-fresh 2,0-litre mStallion TGDi petrol engine or the firm’s familiar 2,2-litre mHawk turbodiesel unit. The turbocharged petrol unit makes 112 kW and 320 N.m, while the oil-burner offers 97 kW and 320 N.m.

Transmission options will include a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed torque converter automatic cog-swapper (both with a 4x4 manual shift transfer case with a low ratio).

Price this right and it could be a run away hit like the Jiminy. Has Good engines an auto option and decent safety. Let’s see if Mahindra SA bring it here

I wonder if it will come here to SA and how much it will cost. I hope it's atleast on par or slightly cheaper than the Jimny

New Mahindra Thar displays its off-road chops in official video

Mahindra has released a video of its new Thar undergoing testing, with the second-generation body-on-frame model displaying its chops off-road.

The three-minute clip shows the new Thar heading off the beaten track near Chennai in India.

As a reminder, the second-gen Thar arrives some ten years after the original, having grown slightly compared with its forebear (overall length has increased from 3 920 mm to 3 985 mm).

Engine options include a box-fresh 2,0-litre mStallion TGDi petrol engine or the firm’s familiar 2,2-litre mHawk turbodiesel unit. I hope it'll be affordable when/if it reaches our market. If it is the same price as the Jimny or undercuts it I think it'll sell really well, especially the diesel varient.

2020 Mahindra Thar Comprehensive Review | The Car and Bike Show

This week on the carandbike show we review the new-generation Mahindra Thar. It is built on a new platform and gets significant design updates, making it look more macho and burly than before!

The SUV remains every bit the Thar and yet immensely modern and better finished. The new Thar gets a 2.0-litre turbo petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel engine along with a 6-speed auto and manual gearboxes.

Has anyone driven the current/old gen Thar? How does it drive compared to something like a Jimny, Land cruiser 70 series or old TJ Wrangler?

Has anyone driven the current/old gen Thar? How does it drive compared to something like a Jimny, Land cruiser 70 series or old TJ Wrangler?

If you owned comfortable 4x4s before then the Thar is a NO.
It was a rough ride. Built like a brick so catches the wind where there is none.
It is slow and loud.
Too tall to fit under some shopping center parking lots and most garages at homes or basement parking lots.
The side mirrors rattles.
You have to put some money into it to get is more comfortable for daily driving(sound system, central locking and alarm, window tinting, hard top, wheels with a bit better offset)

But, I still miss that Thar. It is just something else. Had very little issue with it and was very capable off-road. Camping with it was amazing.

If you give me the option of the old Jimny(this was my option when I bought the Thar in 2016) or a Thar, I would choose the Thar again and again everyday.

But, compared to the new Jimny the old Thar does not stand up well as a daily driver.

I traded it in with a heavy heart on a Nissan Micra because the service intervals were only 10 000km and it had no service plan back then. Traveling 120+km per day gets heavy on the pocket with those service intervals.

I now have a Jeep XJ as a second car and camp vehicle which I feel is also nicer to drive than the old Jimny and Thar(The XJ is 23 years old, auto with 4.0 petrol engine).

If you are really interested in a Thar then take one for a test drive to and from work if it is going to be your daily and think long and hard about it. If it is for camping and exploring only, don't even think about it, just buy it.

2020 Mahindra Thar Off-Road Review | MotorBeam

We took the 2020 Mahindra Thar for an off-road excursion and even drove it extensively on the highway. The new generation is thoroughly well-engineered and comes across as a massive improvement over the previous model.

Mahindra Thar : Official Review - Team-BHP

Mahindra Thar Pros
Fun, fun, fun! A loveable car that will bring you loads of laughs & smiles
• Handsome Jeep styling & brute character. Tough build too
• Far more user-friendly than the ol’ Thar due to superior interiors & the amenities
Very competent, refined turbo-petrol & diesel engine range
• Butter-smooth 6-speed Automatics available with both engines
• 4x4 hardware, off-road capability & 226 mm GC. Get ready for slush, muck, deserts, jungles & the mountains!
• Practical hard-top or fun convertible available in the Thar – take your pick
• Features such as removable doors, ESP, cruise control, hill hold / descent, TPMS…

Mahindra Thar Cons
• Very bumpy ride quality. The Thar is never settled, no matter what the road or speed
• Poor road manners at high speed. Best to cruise at 100 - 110 km/h only
• Impractical due to the 2-doors, 4 seats (not 5) & difficult access to the back seat
• Laughably small boot simply isn’t enough for holiday luggage
• Petrol AT is thirsty due to its hefty weight, 150 BHP & torque-converter AT
• Premium pricing for the higher variants. Lot of money for the Thar's limited usability
• Sad feature list for a 17-lakh car. No reversing cam, auto-dimming IRVM, auto headlamps & wipers, electrically-folding ORVMs, rear wash & wipe…
• Apprehensions of niggles & Mahindra's hit-or-miss after-sales service quality

Mahindra Thar AX & AX Std silently removed from website - Team-BHP

Entry level variants of Mahindra Thar, with fixed soft top and side facing rear seats no longer on sale. Prices of Thar now start at Rs. 11.90 lakh.

It appears that Mahindra has silently removed the AX and AX Std variants of the Thar from the brand's website.

These were the cheaper variants that were priced from Rs. 9.80 lakh. This means that the Thar now starts at Rs. 11.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

The new Thar is based on the Gen3 chassis. The AX variants were offered with a fixed soft top, side facing seats, steel wheels, mechanical lockable differentials and a manual transmission.

Higher variants come with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment head-unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity among other features.

The Thar is offered with a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder mStallion petrol that produces 150 BHP and 320 Nm and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel that makes 130 BHP and 320 Nm. Both engines are available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Four-wheel drive with a manual shift transfer case is standard across all variants.
