Regardless of the politics, I think the things are FUGLY beyond belief. The background patterns are reminiscent of my grandmother's faded curtains from the 70's, there is no coherent design sensibility, just a seemingly random hodgepodge of overlaid elements. But perhaps the most offensive assault on good taste, is the sickly shades of colours they've chosen for the notes, most particularly the R50 which looks filthy even when it's brand new.

I'm sorry, but these notes look like they were designed by a committee of demented kindergarten artists.

Totally agree.

Now that I have seen the notes in person, definitely approve! :)

I don't call them rands anymore, they are madibas... As in "I dropped 200 madiba's at the club last night"

The new R20 looks... dirty. That colour's just off.

I've taken to regarding the side with the animal's head on it as the front... No gripe with ol' Tata, but politicising currency is still wrong.

I liked the Big 5 theme for it's neutrality. However, if we had to put a person on our notes, it could only be Mandela.

I do wonder what happens long term though. He's such a hero that I don't see a way for any later notes not to have his face on them.

People complain when we don't do things the way the rest of the world does. Then when we do something the way the rest of the world does, they complain about it.
