New Mazda 2

The 2020 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Is the Forbidden Mazda 2 You Won't Be Sorry You Settled For

We thought it was dead, but apparently it is not dead. The 2020 Toyota Yaris hatchback returns, essentially as the hatch version of the Yaris sedan based on the Mazda 2. It still has 106 horsepower, but now comes with a few more standard features and restyled bodywork.

New Toyota Yaris, or is it a Mazda?

As part of a small car resource sharing agreement, this new Yaris isn’t a Toyota.

One of the big surprises for the upcoming 2019 New York Auto Show later this month has been revealed ahead of time. It’s the new Toyota Yaris, which is in fact, a Mazda.

The consequence of a complicated joint venture between Japan’s largest automaker, Toyota, and Mazda, these rebadged hatchbacks will go on sale in the U.S. first, before possibly expanding to other markets.

Viewed in its side profile, the new Yaris is obviously a Mazda2, whilst the rear three-quarter aspect is also unmistakably influenced by designers from Hiroshima, instead of Aichi. The alloy wheel centres roll Toyota’s emblem though, to remind you that this is, at least in name, a Yaris.

From the front you can see the slightly revised grille, with the small Toyota logo at its centre. Inside the cabin is typically Mazda in design: clean and minimalist, with a Toyota steering wheel boss badge, the only revealing symbol of its Yaris marketing differentiation.

Toyota unveils new Mazda 2-based Yaris hatchback for US

2020 Yaris hatchback will be built in Mexico for the US only; features more equipment as standard

Toyota has launched a new Yaris hatchback, based on the Mazda 2, for the US market at the New York motor show.

The 2020 US Yaris will be built for Toyota by Mazda’s Mexican arm and is mechanically unrelated to the Yaris models sold elsewhere.

The relationship with Mazda’s supermini can be seen in the model's basic shape, although it has a heavily reworked front fascia featuring the "hunkered-down, bulldog-like stance" that has become integral to Toyota’s global design language.

The platform sharing agreement between the two Japanese manufacturers stretches back to 2015, when Mazda began production of restyled variants of the 2: the Toyota Yaris for Mexico and the Scion iA for the US

This only applies to the NA market.

Mazda2 handed subtle facelift (including under-the-skin updates)

The facelifted Mazda2 hatchback has been revealed in Japan, featuring subtle styling changes and a handful of under-the-skin updates.

Previously known as the Demio in Japan, the B-segment hatchback has been renamed Mazda2 in its home country, lining up with the moniker used in the majority of international markets (including here in South Africa).

Mazda says it has improved “handling stability, ride feel and cabin quietness” in the entry-level hatchback thanks largely to the fitment of a new suspension system.

In terms of styling, the firm claims to stripped away “superfluous elements” to enhance the model's “freshness and presence on the road”. It has also added new 16-inch alloy wheels finished in high-gloss paint.

Inside, Mazda claims the chosen materials and colours “balance quality and playfulness”. It has also added new front seats (including an optional six-way power-adjustable driver’s perch), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and updated safety features such as radar cruise control (with a stop-and-go functionality) and adaptive LED headlamps.

Mazda 2 hatch upgraded with mild-hybrid tech

Design tweaks and hybrid power for revamped version of Japanese firm's Ford Fiesta rival

The Mazda 2 will gain mild-hybrid power as part of a facelift for the compact hatch, which also includes design tweaks and technology upgrades.

The Japanese firm’s Ford Fiesta and Hyundai i20 rival will retain the 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine, but is now boosted by a belt-integrated starter/generator on all manual models. It will be offered in two stages of tune, with a 74bhp version on entry level SE-L models, and a 89bhp powertrain for SE-L Nav, Sport Nav and GT Sport Nav trims. The manual versions produce 94-95g/km of CO2, depending on trim level, with a WLTP-certified combined fuel economy of 53.4mpg.

Mazda 2 1.5 Skyactiv-G Sport Nav 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

There's much to like about the 2. While it can’t match newer rivals for sheen, it’s unpretentious, likeable, immensely usable and refreshingly simple, while offering both decent handling and efficiency.

Unfortunately, the benefits of the mild hybrid engine are hamstrung by the gearbox to which it's attached, while the £17,495 list price of our test car is uncomfortably close to those of newer, more polished rivals.
