Should I buy one?

If you want a swift supermini that isn’t 200bhp rubber-chewing hot hatch, the 2 GT Sport is worth a look. It’s better to drive than Vauxhall’s 123bhp Corsa SRi 1.0 VX-Line, for example, with its low weight delivering more go than you’d expect. It’s also well equipped, adequately spacious, especially given a footprint usefully smaller than average, comfortable enough for distance (just) and easy to live with.

It's a shame, though, that the 2's character couldn’t be more flavoursome. For many, those 200bhp superminis are simply too extreme, besides being pricey and challenging to insure. The excellent power-to-weight ratio of the GT Sport offers the potential to offer something memorably engaging for thousands of pounds less, but in this dynamic tune, it’s just too bland to have you busting to drive it again.

I test drove both about a year ago. I'd take the Corsa over the Mazda 2 any day of the weak. So much more fun to drive IMO. Mazda 2 felt more clausterphobic as well... I just didn't like it.

That was the dumbest thing GM did when putting the entry level Corsa spec together, but it can be fixed for cheap. Corsa remains the class leader.

Well, we test drove a Mazda 2 again (this time for the SO) and eventually bought it. Completely different experience, way longer test drive, far more interested sales person.

Didn't test drive the Corsa, but did the Clio. Mazda is just a better car this time around.

So considering what I know now after a second round of test drives, I take that back. I'd take the Mazda over the Corsa.

Quite a typo to add the word "turbocharged".
It definitely isn't at 115lbft torque.
I also doubt it can actually do 8.7sec. Maybe at coast.
But I seem to recall a local test doing over 10.

Mazda 2 Sport Black 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

Even wearing its Sport Black finery, the 2 can’t quite match newer rivals such as the Seat Ibiza or Ford Fiesta when it comes to features, equipment and all-round shine - and, at £15,995, this special edition is not far off the price of the £16,015 list price of an 89bhp 1.0-litre Ibiza in mid-level FR trim. But there’s still plenty to recommend here, especially if your priorities lie on the dynamic side and you're looking for something a little different from your small car.

In some ways, it seems fitting that Mazda has ‘simplified’ the 2 range with this refresh; the 2 is a supermini that succeeds because of its simplicity. It stays true to Mazda’s Jinba Ittai philosophy rather than worrying itself with trying to mimic flashier rivals.

That results in a simple, pleasurable car that's capable of rewarding and entertaining an involved driver. That said, unless you're particularly fond on limited-run models and glossy black trim, it's worth questioning the £1100 extra for the Sport Black.

Mazda2 crossing over? Design boss drops baby SUV hint

Mazda’s design boss has hinted the next-generation Mazda2 hatchback could end up as a crossover as consumer tastes continue to shift towards high-riding vehicles.

Speaking to Drive, Mazda design chief Ikuo Maeda revealed that the fifth generation of the Japanese brand’s small hatchback could come in the form of a crossover, slotting in below the CX-3 (which reports have already suggested will grow appreciably in size in its next generation).

“At the moment, I don’t have the answer to what will happen with the Mazda2, but we will put some focus on the future of that size of car and what it might turn out to become,” Maeda told the Australian publication.

“I would suspect compact cars are very important and we won’t ever see the disappearance of this, but what the exact needs for this compact segment are we don’t really know just yet. It could all shift towards towards SUV.

“All I can say is that we have just started with this new generation [of design] and we will always look for new opportunities. We will take time to see where this design takes us and we have many different options for this at the moment,” he added.

Interestingly, the Drive report adds that the next-generation Mazda2 is likely to be launched in 2021 “at the earliest”, with the Japanese firm focusing on its recently revealed Mazda3, the updated CX-5 and the next-generation (Isuzu-based) version of the BT-50 bakkie, before turning its attention to its first electric vehicles.

Wife actually like the Mazda 2 and would like it in Auto.
My sister has the old one and it has clocked 200 000km with minimal issues to date and still continuous to soldier on with its daily duties.
