New Mazda 2

Not surprising. They're too expensive. They want BMW pricing but they don't offer the same quality of product.
That's not entirely true, not looking at just one model but their entire lineup, you will see that Mazda cars are generally well priced compared to the competition, for an example, an entry level CX5 is R48k cheaper than a comparable Hyundai Tucson, R100k cheaper than the entry level Kia Sportage and it's even cheaper than the similar range Qashqai as well as many other comparable models, while being far more superior in features and performance.

Mazda 2 supermini axed after a decade on sale

Pure-petrol and mild-hybrid hatch is dropped in favour of newer 2 Hybrid

The Mazda 2 has been axed in the UK following its effective replacement by the Mazda 2 Hybrid – a rebadged Toyota Yaris.

The supermini can no longer be ordered brand new, and a spokesperson for the brand confirmed to Autocar that just a “few hundred” examples remain in showrooms across the nation.

It brings to an end a near-decade-long run for the supermini. It arrived in the UK in April 2015 and earned praise for being fun to drive, with decent turn of pace and a smart cabin. It was facelifted in 2019 and then again in 2023, each update adding extra tech.

Mazda did not elaborate on why the 2 was cancelled, but a spokesperson told Autocar: “As we move towards increased electrification of our cars the Mazda 2 Hybrid meets consumer demand in the B-Segment and is a step in our journey to ensure all our cars have some form of electrification by 2030.”

However, the 2 was already offered with a mild-hybrid powertrain, suggesting its cancellation may be down to another factor.

Of course, its age alone meant that it was due for replacement, but it is possible that Mazda was also encouraged to do so by the UK’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate – the government’s official timetable forcing car makers to gradually ramp EV sales up to 80% in 2030, and 100% by 2035.

Sayonara: the petrol-powered Mazda 2 is no more

Production of the ICE-based supermini has ended, leaving the Mazda 2 Hybrid to fly its Yaris-ey flavoured flag

The Mazda 2 is no more – at least in petrol-powered form. The dinky supermini is being killed off here in the UK, with its place taken by the slightly more environmentally-friendly Mazda 2 Hybrid, a curiously rebadged Toyota Yaris.

The decision to consolidate all its supermini eggs into one electrified and not-especially-Mazda basket comes as the current third-gen model of the 2 hurtles towards its 11th birthday. The aging ICE version has been crying out for a proper update, but the sales figures haven’t made enough of a business case to keep it. Mazda sold 1,000 more Hybrid versions in the last two years while both options were available.

“We’re moving to Hybrid solely, as that puts us on the right path for our journey to electrification,” a Mazda spokesperson told TopGear.com. “Currently, the Hybrid meets the demands of retail customers, who are not fully committed to making the switch to pure electric.”

Mazda dismissed any suggestion that the rules of the ZEV mandate played a role in the decision. “There’s plenty of flexibility within the framework, so when the industry hit 19.6 per cent against a target of 22 per cent, no carmaker paid penalties using the flexibility of the scheme.

Finally discontinued, its about time this 20 year old car is canned. Now if they could close down Mazda all together, they are broke and sell outdated cars. No money for new offerings.

I don't follow the "norm" here & will always speak my mind.

Mazda (still) makes excellent cars on many levels. I will always recommend them to folks online & IRL.

Lots of clever & innovate engineering at play.

Plus they were not bullied with the EV mandates kark like ze Germans & most of the Japs (bar Toyota).
