New MTN EDGE Pricing

I don't want to tear any service provider a new one, but I see the same SP name appearing in both this forum and the Vodacom 3G forum, and it seems like the same issues regardless of network :(.

Surely MTN & Vodacom cannot be held responsible if a 3rd party service provider isn't keeping itself up to speed with the Cellular Network Operators...?

Feel free to tear this particular SP a new one...I have been with them since 2000 and am often apalled & frustrated at the level of service I receive...like now, I am trying to send them a message using their online billing system to get the 10 MB data bundle loaded onto my account. This is *supposed* to be easy, because things get done without me having to fax through the hundredth copy of my ID....but the system has been saying "we apologise there was an error" since yesterday morning.

D'oh!

Please mail me something about what is currently available. For instance the new 500MB data contract is not on your website yet. What are all the offers that the Vodashops must give me. They usually dont have the info. Maybe you have all of this in spreadsheet of some kind.

So when the 11th rolled around I started surfing the web using GPRS, being under the impression that the reduced data rated have already kicked in (R2/Mb). What a shocker this morning when I checked my online bill to see that I have been billed R64 for 1527204 units (1 unit = 1 byte?). Last night's quick email check of 133432 units was only 23c.

Anybody else got a surprise like that?

Yes i know a friend that also got quite a shocker being billed still at the R50 p/MB rates. [He used about ~5MB and got a nice ~R200 bill]

This is very worrying indeed.

Where is this "Online Bill" you speak of? I've been hitting that GPRS like there's no tomorrow... If it's still on the old rates, I'm boned.

Incidentally, when you call 258 now, they don't mention any data charges anymore.

SO IF YOU GOT BILLED this big amount should u not complain cos they are meant to introduce the new prices by the 11th.

MTN is busy doing assurance checking on the new rates. The online bills and IVR lines will not necessarily reflect the newly implemented rates until the full process has been completed and all outstanding/lagging records processed.

Any bills that reflect old rates will be adjusted to an accurate view.

If you encounter inaccuracies by the time of your monthly bill run, MTN will make the appropriate adjustments.

If connections were made before 11 April 2005, obviously the charge will reflect the old rate.

If the user is on a legacy price plan which was not part of the new deal, they will pay R25/megabyte. This was discussed earlier in the forum.

There were some call records for postpaid customers which were incorrectly rated (a very small proportion of the total usage but when customers received their bills they will be charged the correct amount.

Thanks

GPRS100 Bundle

Well, decided to brave the MTNSP offices in Bloem to activate the 100MB bundle today. The consultant didn't know about it, but found it quickly enough on the system. Couldn't activate it because of some problem with my dual sim, but they fixed that up in 30 minutes at the Head Office side.

Few hours later, this is what I see on my online billing:

GPRS 100MB 2005-04-13 - 2005-05-07
Allocated 174,762,667
Used 0
Carried Over 0
Available 0

Now that's about 166MB ... wonder why?

I previously posted that I had placed an order for a 100Mb bundle with MTNSP's 808 call-centre (that was on Tuesday morning). I called this morning to check whether the bundle had been added, and I was told that it had not, and that I could not be helped until Friday.

Having just migrated from Cell C I'm used to this sort of thing, but I really expected better from The Better Connection.

I phoned 808 on Monday, was told to fax the request ( contract in company name ) and it was eventually activated Tuesday afternoon.

Phone them again and don't take 'no' as an answer. Insist on speaking to the supervisor if you have to.

Surely MTN should have double checked with the Service Providers that their systems are in place... I mean really!

And do what ???? Delay launch?? You can guarantee that MTNSP were ready, as it is with Vodacom - only the company owned SP counts, the rest are just pawns in the game.

I called 808 yesterday and the guy on the other side said he can't add the 1 GIG package till next week. I told him that is crap and demanded to speak to the manager on duty. My 1 GIG was load 3 minutes later.

Their front line sucks.

MTN has a contract with all the Service Providers which allows for notification of new services and a minimum mandated notification period. The same notification was sent out to all the service providers last month - hence the early breaking of the new tariffs on this site.

I have contacted the two service providers mentioned on this site for meetings to follow up on postings I have seen on this site to get suggestions on how to facilitate future data launches from our side.

I think EDGE is a real alternative to Telkom dialup services. I am currently browsing this forum now before 7pm on EDGE. It's at least as fast as a 56k modem and i've been online now for 20 minutes, total data usage is 500k - R1 on MTN in other words. If i had dialed up using my 64k isdn, those 20 minutes would have cost me R6.40. Amazing, isn't it?

Absolutely Gaz, I'm in the same boat as you. I have ISDN, but the per minute call charges are just exorbitant. I am very close to cancelling it. I actually want to get rid of my landline alltogether. MTN seems like the logical choice if you are anti-Telkom like me.

Sending emails, heck, that is cheap. I spent 1 and a half hours emailing yesterday and it cost R1.50. Compare that with having to estimate how long the mail is you are going to type whether you should first disconnect, type the mail, and then reconnect. I hate having to sit with a stop watch or watch the clock for the beginning of call(a little bit)-more time. While doing that we have to keep in mind that our favourite fixed line telecommunications company rips us off with 59c each time we try and connect. Telkom calls this 59c a "routing fee".
MTN charges us 1c. Wow, congrats to MTN (and their competitor of course)

By the way, anybody heard anything from Cell C???
