New MTN EDGE Pricing

Hi Christopher

Prehaps you could also provide the users of this forum with an answer to another question that has been receiving a lot of attention lately :

Does MTN charge for sms Delivery reports on prepaid or contracts ?

Automatic searching for EDGE towers?

mtnbb, as you stated, not all towers are EDGE enabled yet.
I know that if you have 3G device, it will always first search for a 3G tower before trying GPRS. Now how does it work if I have an EDGE/GRPS phone (i.e. no 3G)? Will my phone search for an EDGE tower first?
If not, how can I make sure that I use an EDGE tower besides setting up a very directional antenna?

... and mywireless STILL has no representation on the forum. goodbye sentech hello mtn.

5. 2 new package have been created
a. Extended Data Standard (EDS)

Connection Fee R99.00
Monthly Subs R500.00
Included per month data 1 GB
Connection Incentive R0.00
Out of Bundle Rate R1.25

b. Extended Data Free (EDF)

Connection Fee R99.00
Monthly Subs R649.00
Included per month data 1 GB
Connection Incentive R2500.00
Out of Bundle Rate R1.25

Does (b) implies 65c/MB with a datacard included? Would this compare with Vodacom's 3G-One @ 60c/MB that includes a datacard?

The short answer is that prepaid is charged and postpaid is not.

I need to check hybrid rules (mychoice topup).

Certain corporate bulk packages are charged

Based on our research results we decided to make MTN most competitive for people with an existing device (2 million GPRS, 300 000 EDGE) and for people who overshoot the bundle and pay R1.25 per megabyte with MTN.

hi mtnbb

please tell us when the exact date for edge launch will be. also give us the exact prices and products that will be available to us. i have seen the prices here, is that accurate. Also note that i sent u a private message which is exactly what i asked here, assuming u dont know that the private message facility exists on this forum.

 my phone has started saying "Yello Broadband" recently at home! Does that mean that i will have edge access now, and when i dial in using my normal GPRS settings from my laptop, i will connect at EDGE speeds right??? Does that also mean that i will be covered by 3g when launched? an when are the prices coming down?

edge has launched already on mtn and vodacom. if your phone and the base station support edge you will be able to start using it immediately (mtn tag their edge basestations with a "Y'ello Broadband" Cell ID.) If your phone doesnt support edge, you will still benefit from the upgrade because the coding scheme used on the basestation has been upgraded to "Coding Scheme 4", or CS-4. CS-4 allows upto 20kbs per channel. If you have a class 8 or 10 device, you will be able to get up to 80kbs downloads. Check out the "GPRS Congestion" thread elsewhere on this forum - alot of the questions you are asking have been addressed already :D

The 3G network rollout is for all intents and purposes a new network rollout, so NO, if you have EDGE, it DOESNT automatically mean you will get 3G when its launched!

hope this helps -

The phones will not search for EDGE enabled towers. That is why we have been fairly low key about EDGE whilst we roll out more contiguous coverage clusters. We are looking at a solution to guide the handset to an EDGE site but can only deploy this if/when it works 100% for all handset types.

If your phone says "Y'ello Broadband" you do have EDGE coverage on that cell if your handset is EDGE enabled. You are correct that you dial in with 'normal GPRS settings'. 3G and EDGE are different networks so different coverage and different handsets, although there will be overlap in both cases.

EDGE went live in November last year and it is simply a case of expanding coverage.

The launch date for the new prices is 11 April.

I have received a serious number of private e-mails which I am working through!

I have seen the prices posted a few times now but can give the full, official version. The prices and basic business rules for distribution are in a formatted word doc. I did convert to HTML to post but then exceeded the posting size. If you send me your e-mail address I can e-mail this doc. Prices will also be on the Web within the week. Otherwise I can manually convert the whole doc for posting but give me some time to do this.

mtnbb, thanks for the post

on the 11 of april: must be add a GPRS package to our existing contracts then for the new prices or can we do that now and just start using it on the 11 with the new prices. i dont want to get billed the old prices, that would be an expensive mistake.

how long does it take to upload the gprs service with mtn?

is it service provider or customer care can to this?

thanks

YMMV according to your service provider, but I was provisioned for GPRS automatically without having to do anything. I must say, it will be nice to POP my email to my phone and not have to worry about downloading larger messages because I'm going to pay R45 / MB for the pleasure!

The tariff changes will take place around midnight on the night of the 10th April 2005 so Monday morning sunrise you can be confident the new tariffs are active.

All postpaid subscribers are activated for GPRS by default. For prepaid you need to type in *123*1# (send) and follow the menus on the USSD commands to activate MMS and WAP and get the settings sent to your phone. GPRS is then automatically activated.

The bundles are loaded by your service provider

I can confirm that prepaid users will have web access from the 11th. The bundles will not be available.

mtnbb: What's the prepaid data rate going to be? (Sorry if I missed it)

And will prepaid users be able to use EDGE? And if not, why not? (I know there was mention this above but I just want to be 100% clear about it)

GPRS and EDGE will be available to prepaid.

The charge will be R2 per megabyte, billed as follows:

o Packet switched data usage (data sent and received) will be billed per byte, per session.
o A minimum of 1 byte per day will be billed, if a session was open but no data was transferred (from 00:00 to 23:59).
o Where a session remains active over the 23:59:59 to 00:00:00 time period each day, a billable record will be generated as if the session was closed. The network will however keep the session active, and a new billable record will be generated for the same session, counting from 00:00:00.
o Charges are rounded up to the nearest cent, per session i.e. a minimum charge of R0.01 applies to each new session.

This is just the summary and the full set of rules will be posted on the website for 11 April.

yup

reprisentation, yup, thats what we want to see, welcome MTNBroadband.
let the game begin !

Good ol’ MTN.

I spent the last 2 months logging on every day to the forum, hoping against hope that MTN would pull something out of the hat to prove that I made the right choice 7 or whatever years ago. I sent the occasional snide swipe in the vain hope of provoking some response – a bit like poking a stick in the swamp.

A week ago I engaged on a work project that was 24 hour work&sleep. Imagine my delight when I surfaced and logged on again for the first time in 8 days – a whole new thread of 60+ postings and WOW our very own vodacom3g in the person of MTNBroadband

OK Mr MTN. So you have rescued me from the evil clutches of Yebo – by a smallhair you better believe, and only because I am an existing MTN client – changing my cellphone number would be extremely painful. Now what? I am ready and willing to give you my body, soul and broadband account, but are you worthy – I fear not.

I visited the local branch of AutoPage who is my subwhatever. The guy had just received a ra-ra about Blackberry, and he decided that’s what I wanted and needed, never mind the Edge-smedge that I was on about.

Next, a phone call to my ‘upgrade centre’ – you don’t want to know!

So Mr MTNBroadband, I’m afraid you will have to provide the answers:

Which phones/cards are Edge compliant? The magazines/brochures are big on how many pixels the camera has, but nothing on Edge/GPRS+. Do you have any of these phones/cards as part of an upgrade package? If not, how much do they cost?

Do you have an Edge equivalent of the Vodacom 3G card? How much?

Do you replace my ISP and provide email account/s and internet gateway ala MyWireless and IBurst, or do I still need to pay an independent ISP? Is this the same as Vodacom?
