New MTN pricing packages

I'm not impressed either... seems very similar to Cell C's ControlChot and their own MyChoice packages (with some very minor perks thrown in).

does a comparison exist between what they are now offering to previous packages? I would love to see a comparison to see how we are being screwed!
Are old packages automatically converted?

Isnt this also similar to vodacom's topup contracts - where you can use the rand value for anything - eg sms/voice/data???

I told you so !

Like we all hate to say ,

I Told you So !

MTN has not reduced anything !

Dont be fools Guys ! I wanna believe all smart people post here !

Cell-C's Contract option is still the best in the market SO SPREAD THE WORD !

R100 = R115 Airtime + 100 sms's + Late model Phone + 60 minutes Free Cell-C to Cell-C on every Week-End - Now that is Full Value !

DXL - Consumer

Look at their MTN AnyTime 750 and MTN AnyTime 1200 pricing for In Bundle rate. It is R 1.60 a minute. Times that by 500 (minutes) and you get R 800.00. Vodacom's Talk 500 package is R 800.00 and that includes 500 anytime minutes. So they are both exactly the same price (the Talk 500 from Vodacom also includes 100 sms's)

the idea is to make you think that they have become cheaper, without actually doing so. in other countries, its called deception: trying to make u c something that is not really there.

MTN 750 AND MTN 1200 have bundled sms's as well, im pretty sure its 50 free.
After retariffing the equivalent MTN 100 to a MyCall 100 the MyCall always came out on top, even though the mycall was not pure per sec (60secs initial + 30secs increments) compared to the new MTN Anytime (0 initial + 1sec increments)

But note the new packages seriously depend on usage, if you make alot of calls more than a min long, then the equivalent Procall package will 99% of the time be cheaper, if you make alot of short calls then the equivalent MTN Anytime will be cheaper, but i have yet to see a retariff that proved the new packages to be cheaper, the only flaw in my retariffing is that i dont know what happens to a call when it moves from inbundle to outofbundle, in a normal MyCall or Procall, the call basically restarts and you are charged initial + increment again, not sure about new packages yet. Also note that inbundle subsidy applies to SMS+MMS+VOICE+INT+ROAM+VAS+SMSINT+DATA whereas standard packages only apply freemins(VOICE) + freesms(SMS) , so if you make use of all your services, the new packages will come out on top. This is hardly the case, as most people use their phones for voice and sms, SMS or DATA bundles cost vary and cant be considered as an addon to reduce your bill as these are not inclusive in the package and therefore cant considered in the calculation

The new packages have clear benefits to the price conscious user since you can check ur freebundle balance at any time and stop your usage when you hit your limit, whereas normal Procall and Mycall packages have offpeak and peak subsidies and no subsidy on other services, therefore you're tempted to use your phone for sms when you run out of voice. From experiance the MyChoice 75 and 150 (60s initial + 1secs increments), are still the best value for money, as these retariff on average to the cheapest packages on offer. even for high usage subscribers.

You can still renew on existing packages, for now! so when the new packages come out, theres no need to move to them if you feel that its not worth your while. MTN dont have idiots deciding the price of these packages and obviously have a plan, especially with interconnect rates coming under fire recently and hence their move not to distinguish offnetwork calls, this makes choosing a plan a billion times simpler for the average user. INT calls have now also been categorized into zones (and thank god now clearly show MNP_NETWORK D80 to identify an INT CALL on the CDR's!!!), these zones are easy to understand and are alot cheaper, but whateva you do, dont ever ROAM on DATA, ull regret it.

The new packages are a definite step forward even though they dont present an obvious saving now, only because the majority of south africans dont make use of all the services offered by MTN, this will change over time when DATA and MMS become more popular. And for everyone that loves SMS'ing shortcode numbers (35050 etc.) the amount is now depleted from your subsidy amount on the new packages, and you dont have to pay out of your pocket, cos its included in your subscription. These saving arent obvious, but they are a reality.

Hope this helps (p.s. i cant release any retariff data, so dont ask!)

yeah I know that both Vodacom's Talk 500 and MTN 750 AND MTN 1200 come with 100 sms's. Was just saying that they are both exactly the same price. They both work out to R 1.60 a minute. Just thought it was interesting that they don't even differ by a cent

Thats true, but the point of it is that you have more inblundle subsidy, hence ull get the R1.60 rate for R500 more or so, hence a greater saving

Everyone here assumes that the monthly fee for say the Anytime R750 wil be R750 ... I preume the savings part will come in where you get a better phone or you only pay R699 for the R750 package etc etc. So the discount will be on your monthly contract amount and not necesarily on the per minute rate. the same as when u get the MyCall 100
(R129) for R89 and a cheap phone.

well yes and no, there is a saving when taking a higher package since there is a greater Incentive, but that only means they'll be able to get a better phone, thats still a once off saving and you wont c it again, i doubt they'll use the incentive to lower your monthly subs on the higher packages.

the saving is when you take a MTN 750 thats R750 a month, you get R750 of calls @ 1.60 and then outofbundle @ R1.7x whereas if you take the MTN 1200 you get calls of R1.60 for R1200 and then calls at R1.7x, hence cheaper calls for R450 more.

I will probably sign up for one of those packages.
I am currently on vodacom weekender, I pay R135 and therefor i am entitled for a low
budget phone. However, my bill at the end of the month is never R135 because of sms bundle and internet bundle, and some peak calls.

With the new MTN contracts i can get the new omnia .

The prices are:
R319 For Anytime200 (you get R200 airtime)
R449 For Anytime350 (R350 airtime)

Where did you get these prices/info? I thought they are only releasing the packages with phones on Monday? When will the Omnia be available?

The new deals are on MTNSP's site

Edit:
Ok, now I see they're giving good subscription discounts on 24 month contracts. I.e. R50 per month for Anytime R100 contracts.

Maybe I missed this before but it seems you have the option of taking a top-up option, i.e. you have to buy pre-paid airtime yourself if you use up your allocated Rands for the month, or there's a non-top-up option where they just bill you for whatever you use. The higher discount seems to apply to the latter option.

Earlier this week we didn't know of these specials. In my opinion, they don't look so bad anymore.

In & Out Bundle

Can someone tell me what the 'in' and 'out' in the pricing picture means?

In-Bundle Rate:
As long as customer is within their inclusive value the in-bundle rate will apply for local voice calls.

Out-of-Bundle Rate
Once a customer uses their inclusive value, voice calls will be charged at the out-of-bundle rate.

A comparison I was doing and I thought I would share (actually a bit of me "thinking out loud").

The packages that would have interested me before was the ProCall120 and on the current packages it would be the Anytime200. A comparison of the two follows :

Cost
ProCall R285
Anytime R200

Free benefits
Procall 120 free anytime minutes
Anytime R200 free usage - this equates to about 86 anytime minutes if used solely for calls

Other benefits
Procall No free sms
Anytime 25 free sms per month (value of R18.75)

Out of interest if you were to use another 34 minutes (to equal the 120 minutes offered on the ProCall) on the Anytime200 it would cost you an additional R96.90. Which would make the cost R296.90. Throw in the free sms value of R18.75 on the Anytime200 and it makes this package cheaper by R6.85!!

The problem is you get penalised by paying a lot more for calls out of your R200 on the Anytime200. R2.85 per minute compared to the ProCall120 at between R1.65 (same network) and R2.35 (different network). Of course you need to factor in that the Anytime is true per second billing.

The positive for the Anytime packages is that you seem to be getting the phones with no pay in. It obviously means you pay more than the R200 per month for the package but it still seems cheaper than what I have seen being paid for the ProCall120 for similar phones!

Anyway, it looks appealing to me. I especially like the fact that you can be "capped" when you have used up your R200. And the fact that the R200 can be sms's, data or whatever I choose to use it on. And of course the value carries over for 5 months!
