New Notebooks, Recap.

Vertigo I'll argue with you. Our Lacie sales are really up there and the most sold product is the Rugged Drives because they are bus powered and have FW on them for good trf rates. The scary thing is that most purchase's are done at the consumer level.

Another thing is, and this is scary, on MOST advertising agencies currently use Macbook 13''s for their slightly less demanding requirements such as Logo designs and typesetting etc.. and being the the Professional industry they often have the demand for FW...

Put it this way, i'll be damned if I use my rugged through USB... I need to use 2x USB cables to power the thing opposed to using the one FW and secondly it's allot faster.

I know I am ranting and raving on such a small aspect but the lack of FW on the Macbooks I feel is quite a serious thing.

So the MBP is the one I'll have to get seeing as I need the FW.

I disagree... just cause ad agencies are using the Macbook for tasks its not designed for doesn't mean Apple should try and cater to their needs... ever since the launch and success of the iPod, iPhone, iLife etc apple has been showing a clear move away from the professional side of things and making the mac a home computer, ESP the Macbook!!! I think a more pertinent argument is that Apple should have included HDMI, this is something a home user will use, and i think that was an oversight on Apple's part.. FW on a Macbook I can live without!

Now if they remove Firewire from the Macbook Pro or even worse the next iteration of the Mac Pro then that would be a very different story indeed!!!

I suppose you are right, although I still feel that my argument stands ground, and this is on the basis that I am a Macbook user and I use FW all the time... Surely I am not the lone soul on the planet that runs this way?

I mean Aperture and Lightroom run great on a Macbook with the relevant memory upgrade, I'd be damned if I use a USB drive to store my RAW images on, just to slow.

Oh my Giddy Aunt!

You are 100% correct. I had 2 tabs open one with the MBK and one with the MBK Pro and got confused between the 2...

Oh no, no FW at all! :-(

and I was looking forward to using the Novatel 3G Expess card to get rid of this USB 3G modem thingy... :-(

Ok here is another one...

What's the point of the kensington lock slot, if someone can simply turn over the MBK PRO and access the now very easily accessible Battery and HARD DRIVE?!

I think Data is way more important than the CPU and other thingies...

The lock locks down the battery as well, only thing that can be removed if the Kensington lock is in is the Ram.

you live in south africa.... i don't think data will ever be more important that a shiny new piece of computer technology to steal :) besides, the kensington slot is simply a whole in the casing. just guessing but i reckon its pretty cheap to install :) benefit outweighs the cost :)

This was addressed at the event...

10:55AM Q: No Blu-ray, and display port -- why no HDMI?
A: Steve: HDMI is limited in resolution. Phil: for typical computer use, display port is the connector of the future.

I think they also mentioned that HDMI cannot drive Apple's 30'' Cinema Display's.

Although HDMI is slowly becoming a standard in Hi-Definition Home theatre systems. By pushing both Audio and Video through the same cable HDMI is limited to select resolutions.

Quite funny how they avoided the Blu-Ray part of the question...

It's in bold on the front page of this thread.

This was answered as well, may be a poor excuse but I agree somewhat.

10:56AM "Blu-ray?"

Steve: "Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt. It's great to watch the movies, but the licensing of the tech is so complex, we're waiting till things settle down and Blu-ray takes off in the marketplace."

I guess it sucks for those wanting to use the MB as a MBP but I'm always going to opt for the 17" screen anyway so as long as they continue to support FW on those I'm not overly concerned.

The disappearance of FW, albeit gradual, has been evident since they removed it from the iPod.

I am rather dismayed by the glossy screens though!

Are they still going to make a 17" version though?

I'm a bit disappointed that the new MBP is not available with a mat screen. I sincerely hope they're not using the same panels they've been using in the MacBooks.
