New Saol.com ADSL Pricing

Yes Vquest, I am from saol.com.

I can confirm that the prices are correct.
The press release on ITWeb was submitted yesterday before all the excitement - the pricing has now been revised.

lol its all good but in 1 day you decided to revise it from R499 to R299.. huh! I know quite a bit about marketing and what not, but such an gap had to mean either everyone trying to pocket as much as possible still or there had to be a huge meeting with Telkom revising costs making way for this drop in one day.

Mark my words, next week well see R230 for 30gig from some random group of reseller ;)

That would be awesome, then I could actually get a 30Gb account too. Alas, I don't think we'll see much lower than this though, maybe R10-R15 cheaper.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I would like to ask the following questions (because myadsl members will be asking them):

  1. Can you confirm that your 10/20/30GB accounts are normal SAIX accounts?
  2. How many concurrent sessions do you get on the accounts? (Others are offering 2-4 at the moment)
  3. 10 Mailboxes is great, but do you offer free dial-up with the accounts, as other ISP's are offering?
  4. Your prices include VAT?
  5. I want to confirm that when you reach your cap, only international gets capped but local is still at full steam?

Thanks!

Hi VQuest. Please see my answers in the rather fetching 'royal blue'.

Can you confirm that your 10/20/30GB accounts are normal SAIX accounts?

Yup, they're normal SAIX accounts.

How many concurrent sessions do you get on the accounts? (Others are offering 2-4 at the moment)

1, in accordance with Telkom's Terms and Conditions I'm afraid.

10 Mailboxes is great, but do you offer free dial-up with the accounts, as other ISP's are offering?

Nope, no free dial ups.

Your prices include VAT?

Yup, all prices include VAT.

I want to confirm that when you reach your cap, only international gets capped but local is still at full steam?

This isn't the case. Once your cap is reached there is no local throughput. You will be able to purchase a second account "on the fly" though.

Hope this helps. Remember that all ISP's are in the same boat here. We are able to resell ADSL at lower rates as Telkom have dropped our costs. This comes at the same time as a move to encourage our dial-up users to switch to ADSL - so yes, we have made a decision to decrease profits on these accounts.

As mentioned on our website, we would not be surprised if Telkom revise their current pricing structure. Until that happens I think we should make hay, as the saying goes.

Am sorry to mention this but that is BUILLLLSHSHIITTTETET.

Not to be ugly or anything.

TELKOM does NOT CAP LOCAL so there is no reason for you to cap local!!! have taken up this discussion with hyperlink and they are confirming with their account holder at telkom.

I know that this is not right. there is no cap on local no matter how much you look at it. NOT yet anyway

Thanks for the answers Pedantic. :)

Once a customer exceeds their monthly data cap their international traffic will be transferred over a slower international link without effecting local access speeds.

This is a quote from your website. A little misleading - so it might be a good idea to correct it?

As for the concurrent sessions, I'm wondering why ISP's like Axxess, etc have just started offering more than one session.

Thanks again.

have a problem and that is as follows:

The questions that i have emailed to the various ISP's with regard to their 30GB accounts have replied within a couple of minutes.

I have yet to receive any answer from SAOL and i sent the message 3/4 hour ago.

How does this hold up with me being impressed?

remember guys just because you are cheaper doesn't mean that the competition won't drop their prices and still offer good service.

Constructive criticisim

Thanks VQuest. I'm sure you can tell by the date on our ITWeb Press release that we've had to move pretty fast on this. We are editing the site as I type - we honestly didn't expect the thread to catch on fire quite so quickly.

We're trying to be as open as possible and obviously don't wish to mislead anyone.

Can't really say more on concurrent connections. Telkom say we can't do it, so I'm not entirely sure where the ISP's offering this feature stand.

lol all telkom accounts say you cant do it, tho at the same time you can do it by default.

If local is capped after the cap then this sucks..theres only so many caps a person can take ...what on earth am I saying...

yeah.. it is.. R349 vs R199..

/me weighs up customer loyalty vs R150 a month..

Its a difficult one Munwaal. I strongly believe in customer loyalty, but when you're going to be saving R450 over 3 months, it's a little more serious. I had intended on signing up with Axxess but the Web Africa special is way too tempting. It's a nice way of testing their service/support. If it's up to scratch and if the pricing after special is decent enough then I would stay with them. If not, I would then move over to Axxess.

I'm interested to know if Axxess is going to bring out anything similar. It would definitely be in their best interest.

What do you get for being "loyal" to an ISP though? At the end of the day, R150 is quite a big saving..

Thats the thing, you don't usually get anything back from being a loyal customer. There are some clever companies who offer some sort of customer loyalty incentive, but those are few and far between.

So what you're saying is that all the other providers, are going against telkom's terms and conditions and are therefore not legitimate ?

Would be pretty risky for an ISP to breach the conditions, wont it?
