New Scam warning

PC & Mac technical support, Internet installations, & virus protection

Sounds like they do the same kind of thing though? Hmm...

I got this call yesterday. The number that registered on my landline was 00999100222. As said above they directed me around my computer showing me what they said were virus files but they were actually the computers hisorical log of errors.
Eventually they led me to a website and asked me to download the exe file. While he was talking I moused around the webpage and behold it was a remote keyboard and mouse he wanted me to download. I led him on for about 15 minutes telling him I was struggling to do the download. Eventually he gave up.

The site he referred me to was ULTRAVNC.

just tell them u run Ubuntu or any form of Linux lol they will be confused, I get about 30 spam emails a week telling me about money deposited in my bank account yet I don't have an account on any of those banks, fnb, nedbank and standard bank... am talking huge amounts.

Saturday morning 09:22, my wife took a call from 004402024578825, same story. Just said "No we don't" and hung up.
At 09:59, a call from 004402048538929, I took the call. Said "Sure, I do" when asked if I had any computers (was hoping to lead them on a bit). Unfortunately they hung up immediately.
Call at 10:45 (I was out) from 004402024578821. My son answered and hung up on them.
At 11:16 from the same number. I took the call. This time I spoke to them for quite awhile. They claimed they were calling from Microsoft, that they were "E-Security" etc etc. Guy had a very strong accent, battled to understand what the hell he was saying. He was going on about some part of my computer, but I just kept telling him he was speaking gibberish and I couldn't understand him. He then passed me on to his "Supervisor". He also started going on about this part of my computer.. I got him to spell it. He spelled out "LOTA". So I asked him wtf this was supposed to be... he said it was part of my computer. So I laughed and said "Wow, you guys just make sh t up now". He put me back to the "agent", and was saying something that sounded like "Do you take your hand from your ass and then use LOTA". I was WTF? Then he said I must pay them R1000. I just burst out laughing. He hung up on me. :p

They get you into your PC's error log which can be pretty big depending on the age of your PC.

For novice users this harmless folder can look pretty intimidating. They told me that these files were all viruses and they are the only people who can remove them.
Thats when they tried to get me to download ULTRA VNC.

Best thing is to first ask them what OS your are running on your pc. If they say Vista or 7 then tell them "No, sorry but I have a Mac".

Some one needs to mail Cart Blanch about this scam, it might make a good show :)

...Then he said I must pay them R1000. I just burst out laughing. He hung up on me. :p

You should have asked him for their banking details so you could "pay" them. Or set up a spare PC as a honeypot, let them access that then laugh at them when they try get you to pay.

hmm thanks for the heads up, I'll be waiting for a call like this just for the giggles.

You guys are a bad influence:D normally I just politely tell them I'm not interested....This time I decided to play really dumb...got him to repeat everything twice...even had him stressing the words..."com-pu-ter" he says and I go "what?".After about 5 minutes I tell him"oh wait... I don't have a computer" and I could tell he didn't expect me to say that cos he goes "oh, well that's great". So I ask him why did u tell me all that stuff then and that's when he hung up. He claimed to be from Megabyte Solutions...googled them and found these people are trying this scam all over.

They called me as well. And after a few minutes of me keeping them busy making them think that I don't have a clue how a computer work the lady said: "Your computer is corrupted" and she put the phone down in my ear. lol

In the meanwhile I googled everything she told me to do and realised that it was a scam.

For those of you that have the patience, make a game of it. See how long you can keep them on the line. :p

I'm still waiting for my call :(

Maybe I can manage to get them to install VNC and then remotely log in to their computer :D Yes, that's the new challenge, I will pay money to the person who gets this right.

These skelems actually called me this morning. I must wonder where they get people's landline numbers, as we aren't in the phonebook.

I work at a retail pc store and one of my regular customers came in asking about this.

As soon as he said the name MegaByte I cringed and told him that it is a scam and he should not give these people any money.

Unfortunately, he had already paid something in excess of R800 for the "software". I advised him to cancel that ASAP, then showed him this thread just to prove my point.

The people on this forum are generally a little bit tech savvy so hopefully wouldn't fall for this, but 90% of the customers I see are generally novices when it comes to computers so the FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) principle that "MegaByte" uses seems to work!

They pulled this on my mother and father in law this morning, luckily I've trained them both to be suspicious of this kind of stuff so they immediately called me on the other line to tell me what was happening. It seems this crowd prefers calling landlines and my in laws don't have caller ID but I can bet it would have said "Unknown Number"

If anyone gets a call like this on their cell phone and the number displays, keep them on the phone for at least a minute and then report the number to your operator and ask them to investigate.

It also seems this crowd is just calling random numbers as people have reported here in this forum their numbers are not listed. Either that or they have inside help from someone at Telkom or some other ISP who is giving them phone numbers of all people with ADSL lines who of course would have a computer connected to that line.
