New Telkom uncapped ADSL bundle prices

How is LLU supposed to reduce the *cost* of supporting the actual copper wire to your house? It can't magically make it cheaper to replace stolen lines, replace bad copper, maintain facilities required for running the loop etc.

The double line rental is unique to South africa. How does every other country do it at a fraction of the cost.

can never understand why u have an adsl table with prices that don't include line rental. its a cost! put the damn thing in there. is that so hard? we need total cost, not be attracted by a price to later find out about line rental.

Telkom has unveiled its new uncapped ADSL and bundled uncapped broadband rates in anticipation of its imminent ADSL speed upgrades
This joke is becoming a bit long in the tooth now guys, seriously...

R1700 p/m for uncapped 10mbps. lol.

Shouldn't Telkom be tha cheapest since the other telcos/ISP's use Telkom's network/infrastructure?

If some average joe walked into a Telkom store and said "I want internet." Telkom sales person: "Here is your internets at x rands. We'll have it installed soon soon." Would average joe really know better...

Cybersmart offers it (all packages) cheaper if you pay a year in advance

Yesterday's table shows Openweb charge R109 and Telkom charge R219.
Can someone explain the R110 difference?

This is just for the data portion
And why is the line rental not included, it is compulsory after all

The OpenWeb account shown there is the Standard Uncapped. It's basically a Just Surf account under another name. They've got a horrendous reputation for being shaped and throttled to hell and back.

Also, Openweb doesn't offer line rental, only data accounts.

Hey all

With all this talk about new pricing etc can someone please answer a simple question I have:

If you have a 1mb line with telkom and have an uncapped account with a ISP, if you do nothing does you fee increase ? ( Other than by the small CPI increase to telkoms charges )

And then if you do nothing by how much will you download speed increase assuming that the line is a now a 2mb line throttled to 1mb? As i have heard that then the line overheads will not be present, but this may just be talk.

Finally Telkom joins the party and once again it will manage to shake the market, sweet!!

They just do not understand the principle of selling to more for less rather than selling to a few for more. They will only make it if they target volumes. In short, they need to do a Cell C.
Drop the compulsory line rental and I will sign up.
It's just not in me to pay for something that I don't use

Dude, obviously you need to pay for line rental as the simple laws of physics means that with ADSL you are physically using a physical length of cable that runs to your house. If you don't pay line rental then why on earth would Telkom have any need or desire to maintain the cables. You don't want to pay line rental but will be the first one to moan when your line goes down and needs to be fixed. There isn't such a thing as a free lunch, you can't expect to use something which costs money to provide but then don't want to pay for it. And before you say that the cost of line maintenance should be subsidised by the calls made on said line, please don't forget that the simple fact is that you (and many others) always say that you don't use the line for making calls, so such a model will never work. ie: line maintenance costs less profit made from calls made (zero-everyone uses cellphones) = Problem!
