New The PC Build Thread

Its more than 5k just to put UNI fans in that case and then you still need an AIO.

Seems like a good deal, was looing at this for my build might add a ssd and ram from amazon if I see good deals
266 dollars with 61 dollars delivery? Works out more than SA pricing.

Not seeing that only options on my side were 266 + 61 delivery weird

Yeah maybe you need to sign up for prime. Free for 30 days, did it last year and bought a razer mouse then cancelled a month later

Oddly enough I have got prime, though I do see it logged me out .com

Yeah now it's showing, even though not logged in

Replacing RAM in CAD pc. Any real difference between the two that warrants the extra cost? Afaik the 3600 vs 3200MHz is a negligible real-world difference.

Honest answer, for your usecase of a CAD PC... I doubt any marked performance difference will be noticeable.

The CL figures might even out the performance a bit as well, since the 3200mhz sticks seem to have a lower latency figure, but again negligible difference at the end of the day really.

Depends if you've configured the CPU to take advantage of it..
AMD Ryzen likes specific matched memory performance to the IO-die Fclock, otherwise you have to run it at half cycles.
3200Mhz = 1600mhz which is achievable by every chip
3600 = 1800mhz which should be achievable by the 95% percentile of chips unless you're unlucky.

It also matters if you've got an existing set of ram sticks, or if this pair will be the only one.
Are your workloads memory-bandwidth limited?
etc.
etc.

(hint, hwinfo64 will show you memory read/write bandwidth if you need to see if your CAD projects are memory-performance-constrained)

I'd appreciate some input on a new build. My current PC is 10 years old at the moment. Getting back into some gaming now that the kids are older (and the eldest will likely also use the machine for some gaming from time to time).

My starting budget was around R25k. Started playing around with wootwares wizard because I didn't know where else to start. I've been out of the game for some time when it comes to keeping up with hardware. I don't mind paying a bit more if it means better longevity for the hardware... so I'm thinking AM5 rather than AM4.

Would something like this be sensible or are there some better recommendations?

I plan on building the machine myself and don't mind buying from separate places if that makes sense... Thanks!

Get a Micro-ATX case (small mb looks bad in ATX chassis). Look on Evetech for more options. R50 buck more for CL30 RAM and I personally wouldn't buy that AIO. A normal cooler will cool that CPU just fine. You can get Thermalright Peerless Asassin or Spirit 120 from Rebeltech I think.

Edit:

5070 is up to 40% faster. 99% of games won't give you any problem but a few will want more than 12Gb so for them you disable RT and turn graphics down a notch.

Between the 5060 16Gb and 5070 12Gb you either run out of frames first or you run out of VRAM first. 18Gb 5070Supers will be here by January 2026 so you can also sell whatever card you buy now and then pitch in the balance and be futureproofed longer. Or wait.

Maybe it's just me, but note that a new AM4 will probably last as long as a new AM5.

You did not indicate that you periodically upgraded the current 10-year old rig. If you (like I do) normally build a PC and use it until it's time to replace it, an AM4 build will save a bit of money...

10 year upgrade cycle.. that tells me you most likely wont upgrade that am5 spec and just end up replacing the whole machine again.

Could save quite a penny and go b550 am4 motherboard + 5700x3d cpu (if you can find one in stock/2nd hand). Also for gfx, if you're not hard pressed for nvidia, Amd 9060xt 16gb will save you some cash too.

Would perform better than that am5 9600x combo you listed.

BUT

If you do plan on changing the cpu in the future, then stick to am5 as the 5700x3d is the end of the road as far as am4 upgrades go.
