New The PC Build Thread

The flaky drive is running on hopes, prays and digital tears. Already moved the most important stuff from it, just has steam on it now, would be a pain to lose, but I can always just download it again....The work stuff not so much

Stuff on my spinny disks are just backups or stuff that doesn't need speed. Steam, games and windows are on nvmes

yeah I don't have large enough SSD or nvmes.... for that, SSD is 480gig, i don't trust SSD's with important stuff or long time storage.

Just ouch for that price I can get 3 refurbed drives
Prices have gone up quite a bit on ssds now :-( I paid just over 2k for my 2tb 3 months ago. I had 3 SATA SSDs that I can no longer use,so they've been spread around and I needed a big enough NVME to take their load. Honestly it has made a marginal difference in game loading time.

SSDs are like rockstars, fast, flashy, and dead by the encore. HDDs are the janitors still cleaning up after the show.

SSDs are turning out to be more like Keith Richards nowadays with them possibly outlasting HDDS :-)

Got me these 4x8gb 3600 memory from my work. Also not on mobo QVL. Works like a bomb with zero issues. Moerse happy so far.

G Skill is dead to me lol. Put me through so much kak that damn ram.

Well hopefully the rma will give you 32gb back that will work. Plus only 2 sticks, though at least those 4 sticks are the same.

Glad you are on the way to get sorted @Jer1cho.

I haven't had a RAM failure in years, but I get that sometimes it does happen.

I used to run Corsair XMS3 back in the Sandy Bridge era, then went to GSkill Ripjaws with my 1600 and 2200G builds, and now again back on GSkill TridentZ's for the 5600x build that I have.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck with the kit that you had.

Thanks man yeah and it's the second G Skill kit i have had die within like a month. The first were Ripjaws. I think they are just not compatible with me lol. Alls well that ends well at least! Now I can play flight sim again so im happy!

So glad we did the ram jump when we did

All were ripjaws all worked flawlesly and still do R2.65k felt like should we spend this much for the 64gb kits

a bargain bassd on what i read now it seems

The previous kits was also ripjaws

And have a gskill trident z set i got 2nd hand

Really chuffed with the gskill 's
Or is my luck just the opposite

To be honest I laugh a bit when I see people going all out on ram, you do eventually get to a point of diminishing returns on performance to price ratio. Unless you are heavily into overclocking and the likes, the difference in performance between a cl30 and cl36 kit is marginal and it entirely depends on the game.

It is better sometimes to throw more ram at the problem than lower latency. The issue with AMD and intel is their memory controllers are very picky. AMD 5000-7000 memory controller wants dual channel, using all 4 memory slots the memory controller lowers the speed of the ram to 3600mhz. Quite similarly intel 14th gen wants dual channel memory, for optimal performance it doesn't do well with 4 slots populated.

the jump from cl30 to cl36 is marginal at best with 1-2% difference, but a hefty price premium, at cl40 to cl46 between 4-7% performance does fall of a bit.

Cl36 honestly is the sweet spot, for price to performance. The gain at CL30 isn't worth the price to be honest, not at the current asking price, you are way better off throwing speed and bandwidth at the problem than pure latency.

I got my CL30s for a really good price so was like yeah I'll take it :). Part of me is kicking myself for not going for 64GB just cause. I mean my board maxes out at 192GB, the B550 in my sons is 128

I ran a Prime95 mem-test the entire night just to make sure, and all is well. Hopefully the stupid couriers come fetch the faulty kit today, as they were a no show yesterday. Also kinda chuffed I am getting 4.5k in refunds now from Woot and Rebeltech lol. It will be going toward saving for a new monitor. My ancient 32 inch Mecer 144Hz 1440p has a vertical green line running down it. Luckily very close to the side so not too bad, but I would like to get a new one.

Headset is also showing it's age now. Hyper X Cloud Wireless. I love them but they are now like 10 years old as well.
