I could swap the CPU to a Ryzen 5 9600X, but I think the X3D would be better for me. Any thoughts?

Okay you don't need aio for a 9600x, also you're going for B650??
Get an B850 for a scooch more. The 9600x is better for productivity, but the 7500x3d would be better for gaming.

Yeah I get that a lot, too.
 
So, had to go the DDU route after this happened (again). If it doesn’t hold up now, I’m going to bin it and break the bank to get something new and shiny.

So DDU eventually seemed to have stopped the driver timeouts but... then the WHEA 18 errors started. And haven't stopped. Spent a week now trying to get to the bottom of it, and troubleshooting pretty much confirmed that my trusty 5600X is finally on its last legs. It's done well for the last 5 years, but considering I've never OC'd it (no PBO, just stock CPB boosts), it annoys me that it didn't last longer.

So, GPU will have to wait. I was thinking of going the current-gen upgrade route, but because of the insane price of RAM at the moment, going 9600X, B550 and 32GB of DDR5 (because I'd have to replace them all) will set me back over £800. Managed to find a "new" 5600X on Amazon for 8x cheaper than the upgrade, so will just pop that in when it arrives tomorrow and soldier on.

well, that sucks...just 5 years of default use feels like plain bad luck.

Can you maybe poke around the BIOS and see what kind of voltages the motherboard was supplying the CPU? The old CPU should be fine for that, at least. Might be an idea to just update the BIOS anyway if you haven't in awhile.

Been down that road already. BIOS is the latest release. And everything was running at absolute stock in the BIOS while I was testing, and it still randomly went straight to black screen and rebooted just by watching YouTube.
 
AM5 support is set to continue until 2029, so likely still Zen 6 and Zen 7 on the same platform, as long as you have a decent motherboard you can upgrade your CPU later, probably with 2 more options on the horizon.

Personally, I'll consider what's available toward the end of AM5 to extend the longevity of my system, if needed.
 
"New" CPU is in. Jeez, I forgot what a PITA thermal paste can be lol. Hopefully I have good coverage now, because I cba doing it again. Let's see if the new chip holds up. If not, will return it and bite the bullet on the upgrade.
