Hey,

I am a brand new DStv subscriber and I need some guidance. I have searched everywhere (even tried Bing search) but nowhere is there any information or steps a new subscriber should follow. We are just left to get on by ourselves hoping things work.

So...the place I'm currently renting comes with a fixed DStv satellite dish. The LNB on it has two wires coming out of it - 1 going to my place and 1 going to the guy next door. From this I understand that I need a multiswitch in order to use PVR recording capabilities. I went and bought a new PVR 2P decoder and phoned into MultiChoice to have my account activated and so forth. The lady asked me if there is someone at home, I said no and obviously I had my Smart Card with me in order to read the number back to her. So I assume that the decoder and smart card were not paired.

I connected the cable to Satellite 1 and switched on my decoder. It ran through the boot sequence and started 'Determining Footprint'. The decoder gets stuck there. I left it to "search" for a signal, and this morning - you guessed it, still "determining footprint". Why is this happening?

When I cancel the scan, and press the yellow button to "Scan All Enabled Networks", it brings up a message stating that "A connection could not be established to the DStv signal. Please check your installation..." bla bla. Why is it doing this though?

At first I thought it might be the dish, so I contacted the owner of the property and told him about it. He suggested that the "main" cable is going into the guy next door and that's why the signal is not working. I took my decoder with its smart card to my parents' place and connected their LNB cables to both Satellite 1 and Satellite 2 connectors on my decoder (they still have the old PVR I). The same problem persists. Is there something wrong with the connection setup (or rather, does the new PVR 2P require a different installation setup)? Or is this because of the fact that the smart card and decoder were never paired (well, not according to my knowledge)?

It really is frustrating trying to solve this with no forums or threads covering my questions. I tried phoning MultiChoice last night, spend two (2) hours WAITING for a consultant and just gave up. The call itself is costing me more than simply getting a guy to come and have a look (but I'm not allowed to bring in an agent, because the property is not mine).

Please help me to get this sorted. Any advice or recommendations will be greatly appreciated. And for those wondering, the landlord is not of much help at all. If I can solve this without having to get his help, that would be even better!

basically if you planing on recording, you need to get a multi switch the 2 wires coming out of the dish at you place (including the one going to the guy next door) needs to go into the multi switch, and 2 wires from there go into your decoder, and one wire goes into the guy next door - if you dont want to record there is another forum thread on how to set up the pvr with one LNB cable just search for it

as for why its not working at your folks place it could be the decoder is faulty as it should work with the old PVR cables (unless you put their smartcard in your decoder)

I initially thought it was the decoder that was faulty, so I took it back yesterday and got a brand new one. This one is doing exactly the same. Like I said I'm not worried about the recording right away, I just need to see that the service is working but right now it keeps searching for a satellite. Surely it should give some sort of signal on Tuner 1 regardless of the setup?

I haven't tried this one at my folks place but I bet it's going to do the same. Will give it a try and see if it works, and maybe try with their smart card too. I'm just so frustrated and MultiChoice is really not helping in any way shape or form.

Maybe read through this thread you may find your solution

"new to DSTV need...." - Sorry to hear that. :)

Step 1. Cancel DSTV
Step 2. Get Uncapped ADSL
Step 3. Get Hulu and Netflix
Step 4............

It may be worthwhile paying a registered installer to take care of the problem for you. It won't cost that much and it will make you feel a lot better. In my eyes it's worth it.

Ouch. Costly. And be careful, accredited means little at the end of the day.

Indeed, should cost you less DSTV with minimal effort to setup.
