New vs Used Car

R100k is a difficult budget for a hatch. I would drop that to 50k and just by a cheapie if you really need a car. You are going to get about the same value for money and safe half.
Or something like a mazda 2, maybe KIA

The R100K isn't my absolute max, I can go to about R150K if I needed to.

The main thing is to get a good condition reliable car, preferably one that has done under 30K km.

I love the mazda 2 but its a lot more expensive then the vivo?

I recently got a 2011 Nissan Micra 1.2 Acenta for R90k. Had 64000km on the clock. Has airbags, power steering, electric mirrors, ABS, CD/Radio, bluetooth (Parrot, not standard), brand new tyres and mags (lol). She's nippy and light on fuel and accident free with a full service history.

Never a car I thought I'd own, but I'm very happy with it.

Sometimes it makes sense to buy new, if there is a great special for example and you know you will keep the vehicle for a long time (and a long time is 8 or more years).

Agree with this post. Bought a Toyota Corolla Quest new 2 years ago and if you look at current prices, I won't lose money (disregarding time value of money) when (if) I sell the car.

What are your guys thoughts on a Suzuki Swift?

I'm thinking either that or something like a Chevy Spark? maybe a Ford Figo?

It's far from decent, the engine comes from a citi golf and the body is stripped down polo.

They are DOHC 16v engines, Citi golf had SOHC 8v motor, this however does not mean it's got more power however it is much more modern and efficient.

My mechanic said that he kinda hates the Suzuki Swift because they give so little trouble.

My brother has one for work purposes, it does really heavy milage (about 110 000 km in) and hasn't given an ounce of trouble outside of very minor things (I think one wire wiggled off the AC unit)

Picking their nose and flicking it ... Seen that in traffic.

If you drive a 2nd hand car .. look up. Oops it might just fall into your eye.

This reminds me of the very famous TG epi & when all 3 rocked up in old E30 BMW's. What they discovered that was left behind in the cars...lol

Thanks for this!

I was hoping for a positive response to the Swift as I really like it, test driving it tomorrow so hopefully it works out.

Hey guys,

Last question I promise!:D

I didn't really like the swift after the test drive, so now its a battle between the Ford Figo 1.5 and the Toyota Etios 1.5?

I really like the Figo but obviously the Kuga drama has me nervous and wanted to get some opinions from owners of these if possible.

Thanks!
